go to your mytmobile.com account,go to manage profile security and set your preferences to restricted. This will keep you from being able to add charged to your account through your phone.

I think your mistaken. On my iPhone if it detects a wifi signal and connects it shows the wifi bars instead of the E for Edge. Does this happen for you? If not, turn Edge off when home and verify you are actually getting data through wifi. You don't need Edge when in wifi since the wifi will get your data (and with Edge off u still get calls and SMS texts).

This post was formed after i had gotten off the phone with a tmobile representative, she was telling me that apple blocks iphone serials from using WiFi and so it uses the data that the network provides automatically.
idk if i completely believe her

Weird, never got charged for using Wi-Fi. My lines on T-Mobile have no data plans.

No. I use wifi on my iphone all the time. When there's wifi in range, iphone uses wifi instead of data, unless you turn off wifi. You may just be experiencing issues with the wifi on your phone. You can tell whether you are using wifi or based on the symbol next to the carrier (E is Edge and the semi-circles means you are on wifi).
Do note that you will not get instant push notifications for anything that required the internet if you turn off Edge though (e.g. google voice, facebook chat, AIM, etc messages will not always come through right away -- it seems the ios 4 disconnects from wifi when you lock the phone and re-associates every so often if in wifi range). You can run insomnia to continuously keep wifi alive while the phone is locked, but it burns through a lot of battery (you'll go through something like 7-8% battery every hour).

My iPhone 3GS on 4.1 is on T-Mobile with no data plan and I still get push notifications on Wifi.

Yeah, but notice when you have the screen locked for more than 30 seconds and you hit either the home button or the power button that wifi will usually not be connected for a few seconds (i.e. until it re-associates). What that means is that you will not get push notifications when the phone is locked until the wifi re-associates (if it's in wifi range, I think it re-associates every 20 mins or so while the screen is locked). This really isn't an issue, unless you are using your phone for things like google voice SMS, facebook chat, instant messaging, etc. I really only had issues with it for google voice because I use that for SMS and I didn't like not getting a notification for something like 20 mins after I received text message. I also usually couldn't get call forwarding through google voice while the screen was locked (i.e. when someone called my google voice number). Insomnia solved that issue, but it drained a lot of battery.
