That's fine so how can I make it go back to normal mode and get it out of connect to itunes mode?

I've also been at the emergency call screen several times since yesterday, trying over and over again to jailbreak anew. I've forgotten, and can't find by Googling, how to get past this. So, what do I do?
I'm trying to get *anything* to work. I've tried iTunes, both selecting an ipsw and just letting it do it's thing, and just now using Redsn0w 0.9.4 which results in Recovery mode which TU (v 4.30.03) can not exit from.

I did not select a downloaded 4.2.1 ipsw, I let iTunes upgrade as it wanted. It installed 3.1.3 but then entered Recovery and I couldn't get out.
3.1.3 is what I want so I did not try anything else. To try 4.2.1 which jb app do you recommend?
I have PwnageTool 4.2.1 and an ipsw that it recognizes. I'm trying it.

Tried three times, all failed.
iTunes said Extracting Software
Then Preparing iPhone for Restore
But the "spinning" (horizontally) progress bar would never stop.
Then popup window says Error 1604

Open pwnage tool, select your device then click on the DFU button at the far right. Follow the instructions it gives you. Once it is done you should get a successful popup saying you are in DFU (your screen will be black). Open iTunes and option restore to the custom firmware.

I Googled DFU, got it there and started iTunes Restore about 2 seconds before your post! So I'll let it continue; if it doesn't work I'll follow your instructions.
Thanks for your patience!
Sorry for the delay. It worked!!! Thanks! On the second try, your directions. I had found a backup from early January; all the others were either recent or downloaded stock ipsw's, various fw's. But it works now, thanks again

OK. So basically I have the same problem. I have both a 3G and 3GS they were given to me to jailbreak and unlock and I did so using the iPad baseband and they ended up trying to update the iPhone itself, when they were specifically told to not to. So now I have the iPhones and I've tried to update them using the custom firmware i built using Pwnagetool and updating via iTunes and the updates gets stuck at the very end. Any idea how I can fix this?
