    Default Help: Unlocking & Jailbreaking 3G (Baseband 5.13.04 & v. 4.0.2)

Hi everyone! I've been out of the unlocking game for quite a while now. I've been using my old 3G for close to 2 years now, and it's starting to fail me. I acquired a friend's hardly used 3G for cheap and I want to unlock it, so I wanted to check that I have the right steps to doing so.

Well, I'm trying to unlock an iPhone 3G (used only on AT&T and was never unlocked), with a baseband 5.13.04, and currently running v. 4.0.2 (8A400). Thanks to x98car for his contributions, which helped me to make sure I could unlock.

Note: I want to use it on my current T-Mobile plan ($5.99 T-Zones EDGE plan). Btw, I'm on OS X.
So in order to do this, I did some research and found that it's probably the most reliable to go with the following:

    1) Check bootrom to make sure I have an old one.
    2) Jailbreak using redsn0w 0.9.4 to downgrade to 3.x.x (I plan on downgrading to 3.1.3) and Tiny Umbrella to kick it out of 1015 error.
    3) (with 3G off) Ultrasn0w to unlock

    Am I good to go?
I haven't tried this yet, because I wanted to make sure all my bases are covered, and I don't end up bricking this phone.

Oh, and which firmware packet should I download and use?
I'm looking into the basic one here (iPhone 3G FW 3.1.3).
    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks guys!

    1) old/new bootrom does not apply to the 3G so no worries there
    2) no need to jailbreak first to restore to 3.1.3 as it doesn't require shsh's, just restore in iTunes and use TU to kick it out of error
    3) use redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak by pointing it at a 3.1.2 ipsw (you will need to download both the 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 ipsws, you can get them both from the download section of this forum), once done you can unlock with ultrasn0w
In the end we're all just chalk lines on the concrete, drawn only to be washed away. For the time that I've been given, I am what I am.

    Thanks for the speedy response!

Unfortunately, I just found out that redsn0w 0.9.4 won't run on my OS X (my Powerbook is old). Any other options?

    ... [EDIT]

Sorry, after some more research, I found this:
How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 3.1 | Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1 | iPhoneHeat

I'll be taking that route, since I have an older machine (PowerBook G4 OS X 10.4.11).

    ... [EDIT]

Okay, so I encountered another road block.

I followed the instructions found here, and it worked, but once I went into Cydia and tried to add repo666.ultrasn0w.com, it gave me some failure message, exited, and when I tried to go back into Cydia, it just stays on the "loading" screen for a long time and exits by itself.

I tried the whole process again with PwnageTool, created the custom firmware (3.1.2), and then got up to the same point where I started Cydia, but this time, I decided to wait a little bit once Cydia started. I thought, maybe it didn't load correctly the first time. Well, as I waited, it gave me the same failure message (I didn't write down the exact message, but it was a popup with a lot of writing in it).

    Other things i've tried:
    - blackra1n (the "unlock" option doesn't work, and after Cydia installs, when I try to unlock through adding the repo, it does the same thing as before -- gives me the failure message and gets stuck on the "loading" screen).
    - Restored normally on iTunes using the 3.1 fw, but I get the 1015 error, and I can't use TU or RecBoot because they require OS X 10.5+ (ahhhHHH!)

I'm stuck! I can't unlock the phone! Any help would be appreciated!
I will definitely thank whoever can help me with this problem!
