i have 3gs iphone run 3.1.3 not jailbreak yet,want to update to 4.0.1.I have not been make it to upgrade yet.I want to keep old base band of 4.0.1.

Unless you have your SHSHs saved for 4.0.1, you won't be able to upgrade to that specific firmware version.

If you want to keep your unlockable baseband so you can unlock, use PwnageTool (Macs only) to create a custom 4.1 firmware which won't upgrade your baseband. Then shift + restore to it in iTunes. If you don't have a Mac, then you'll need to find somewhere (from a trustworthy location) the 4.1 firmware created by PwnageTool, and then use redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to put your iPhone into the custom DFU mode and then shift+restore to the custom firmware in iTunes.

Doesn't matter what firmware you're on, you can create a 4.1 custom fw with PwnageTool and shift+restore to it to a jailbroken 4.1. If you don't own a Mac, you'll have to find someone to make the custom fw for you. Making it on Windows is a lengthy process, but iYeow and eyeRobot have custom firmware for 4.1. Find and ask them to send you the fw. You'll need Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 to set your phone in DFU then you can shift+restore to the custom fw and preserve baseband.
