You have to update to 4.1 unless you have an shsh saved for 4.0

You can however use pwnage tool to make a custom 4.1 so that your baseband doesnt update and you can unlock again. If you have SHSH then you can go to 4.0 by using tiny umbrella.

I'm not sure what that means. I'm pretty new to unlocking and jailbreaking the iPhone. So would that be the easyist way of goin to 4.0?

The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
Download tiny umbrella from here, connect your device then press save SHSH and see which ones it can save.
You can also download idetector: iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones
This will tell you whether you have old or new bootrom 3GS.
Figure out these two things and then we can go from there.Last edited by Simon; 11-06-2010 at 05:29 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I assume you mean tiny umbrella said that. If that is all it came up with when you pressed save SHSH then 4.1 is the only firmware you can restore to. Use idetector next and then we can go from there on how to get to 4.1 and stay unlocked.

Ok, so here is what you are going to do to get to 4.1 and stay unlocked. You are going to have to find someone who has a mac or a trusted site to download a custom, activated 4.1 firmware that was made with pwnage tool. i cannot post it here as it is against forum rules. Then you download redsnow and use redsnow to put your iphone into dfu, do not select any of the other selections, just the one that says dfu to prepare the iphone to accept a custom firmware.
You can find redsn0w here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
You will also need a copy of the 4.1 firmware which you can download here: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
redsn0w will ask for the 4.1 firmware when you start it up. Make sure at no point to update or restore to the stock 4.1 firmware as there is no unlock yet for it.Last edited by Simon; 11-06-2010 at 06:27 PM.

it also had the other numbers behind it
iPhone3GS 4.1 (8B117)-3466676420013
so it has to be a custom 4.1 firmware or a regualr one from apple?Last edited by raceking777; 11-06-2010 at 06:29 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You need to restore to a custom one if you still want to be able to unlock after. If you know anyone who has a mac they can download pwnage tool and make one for you. Or you can google for it.

No jailbreakme will not work on 4.1. But this custom 4.1 you will be restoring to is prejailbroken. Cydia will already be on it after the restore at which point you would open cydia and then install ultrasn0w. get the custom firmware first then we can go from there.
Once you have the custom 4.1 here are the steps to follow:
1. Open redsnow and click on browse.
2. Point it to the stock 4.1 firmware, not the custom one.
3. When it asks you if this is the newer fixed model select yes then click next
4. Unclick "install cydia" and check the box that says "just enter pwned dfu mode right now"
5. Folllow the instructions it gives you to enter dfu mode
6. Once successfully entering dfu mode open itunes, hold down shift and click restore.
7. A window will open up where now you will point itunes to the custom 4.1 firmware you downloaded.
8. Sit back and relax as the phone restores.
9. Once the restore finishes open cydia, install any updates it tells you to, then install ultrasn0w
10. Reboot and you are down and can now sync all your stuff backLast edited by Simon; 11-06-2010 at 06:57 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
