Update firmware?
Can I update to 4.1 already?
Will I lose the ability to send/receive MMS, data plans and such?
How about cydia and it's apps/download?
Sorry for the silly questions, I'm new to this but I love it and can't wait to be a bit more savvy on the subject!

If you update to the official 4.1 you'll lose your unlock for a while.
You need to use custom firmware(to preserve your baseband, which determines if you can be unlocked or not), made with pwnagetools. (theres a jailbreaking/unlocking section in this forum that would probably help)
As far as MMS, you'd have to set it up again, download the commcenter patch, then the appropriate carrier bundle. (alot more information is in the sticky section, of the t-mobile subforum)The only thing I ask in return for helping, is that you click the thanks button, Thanks!

Nope, theres no unlock for a virgin 4.1 device. You'd have to use a custom firmware, which will preserve your baseband, so you can safely update to 4.1 and still be able to unlock.
You need a mac for this, or you'll have to find somewhere online that has custom firmwares available (but be sure they are reliable)
If you don't want to go through all that, you can just wait until 4.2 is released in a few weeks, once thats out the new unlock should be available, letting you unlock the phone the same way you previously did.The only thing I ask in return for helping, is that you click the thanks button, Thanks!

Here are a few questions you need to answer and i can maybe help you.
What Firmware are you on now?
Do you have you shsh saved with cydia for 4.1?
What are you running Windows or a Mac?
Haver you ever used TinyUmbrella?
Let me know.
Maybe you can use custom firmware or tiny umbrella to preserve your baseband and unlock on 4.1. i would recommend TinyUmbrella Save you shsh then update to 4.1
If you need help on updating and saving your baseband PM me and i will give you a hand.
after the update take a look at these 2 post to get everything back up and running as they should.

+1 for the advice about using PwnageTool 4.1.2. Baseband/unlock (use with any SIM) option is preserved.
Don't forget to backup your Cydia apps (AptBackup/PkgBackup) before your final sync (before PwnageTool) or you'll be forced to manually reinstall them
