3g internet plan?

i just switched to the iphone from a tmobile touch screen phone that required the $30/month data plan to have 3G. now that im using a jailbroken/unlocked iphone 3G 4.0.2, do i still need the $30 3G data plan? because on my iphone its coming up as just EDGE and its so slow. should i just go with the cheaper plan or is there anyway to make it 3G instead of edge?

3G only works on AT&T in the USA.
