Is safe to upgrade to 4.0 and unlock?

Hi,

I have been waiting for awhile to make sure OS4 stable and will be unlocked for Tmobile used.
I have 3Gs runing firmware 3.0 (I think is old modem). Can I use itune and upgrade to OS4 and can it be unlocked? or only can be jailbreak ? and all function such as MMS, SMS, internet, edge still work?

Since you have the old bootrom you can make a custom 4.0 firmware with Pwnage Tool (Mac) or sn0wbreeze (PC) then restore to that.

Whats the old bootrom? I just got a 3GS today on firmware 3.1.2 (5.11.07)
