Please Help Jailbreaking 3G 3.1.3

I sold a friend my 3G iphone to use on Tmobile. I upgraded the firmware to 3.1.3 and jailbroke it with Spirit. Then I unlocked it by downloading ultrasnow (I think thats what it was) on the phone from Cydia.

Well, the phone worked perfectly long enough to make one phone call and now is stuck on the screen with the apple logo. He tried holding down the power and home buttons at the same time. The phone did nothing.

He thinks I should jailbreak it again but I have a feeling that the same thing is going to happen.

Can some knowledgeable person please tell me what's going on and how I can fix this. Please keep all explanations as simple as possible because my knowledge of all this stuff is very limited. My friend knows absolutely nothing about computers.
