unlocked 3g location service .. free??

I got jailbroken and unlocked 3g
without data plan with tmobile
I was traveling with friends and went to motel
to use wifi to use map and i left the map app on..
I drove about a mile and turned on the phone and map was still on
and also an blue arrow(my location) and it was moving along with me.
I just turned it off right away, because i dont know if tmobiles going to charge for it.. my EDGE data is on because of mms setting.. so i was wondering if using location service is free.

If you don't have a data plan, you won't get charged. Maps are saved temporarily in the app

The gps also works without data. Thats why the blue dot was still moving with you.
