    Default Trouble unlocking/jailbreak
Hey guys, I picked up a used 3GS with 4.0 firmware from my buddy today. I have t-mobile and I am trying to get it to work. It is stuck at the "connect to iTunes" screen and I tried many things to get older firmware on it along with just jail breaking 4.0. I am having no success with anything and I'm getting pretty mad.

If anyone can please help I'd highly appreciate it.

I get this code while trying to upload 3.1.2 firmware while the phone is in recovery mode:

What's the serial number on the back? If you have a 3GS with the newer bootrom, you have no way of jailbreaking. With the old bootrom, you have to have previously been jailbroken to be able to restore to a custom 4.0 IPSW.

IPSWs are signed for 3GS, so they have to be authorized through Apple's servers. Downgrading is only possible if your SHSHs are on file through tinyumbrella or Saurik's servers. Basically, you may be SOL at the moment.

You'll have to wait for a ios4 OTB (out the box) solution. But at rate of development 4.0 is getting, it shouldn't be more than a week.

Yea GeoHot is also working on a solution similar to blackra1n. It's only a matter of days until these are released. Until then, you have a $400 paper-weight brick. Sorry.

    Really? That sucks

Why can't I downgrade though? I've tried every possible method with no success.

I forgot to mention that the phone is stuck in emergency mode so I really can't use the phone either.

If you already upgraded you can try this guide Downgrade iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3 with Cydia SHSH | jailbreak

I tried that but I never had 3.1.3 to begin with, nor has this phone ever been jail broken. So it looks like i'm SOL.

If you have a 3GS then it must have been in 3.x.x at some point...

Good point, but it was never jail broken before so I can't use that technique considering it needs my SHSH file.

Quick question guys, according to the post on the main page it says if my phone says Tethered "NO" I can jailbreak.

Well mine says no so that means I can jailbreak 4.0? If so which guide would I use?

When I try to load a IPSW that sn0wbreeze made the loading bar on iTunes just keeps saying "Preparing iPhone for restore..."

    I got a 1604 error
