new iphone user here!!!!
New to the boards I am trying to learn as much as I can about this phone. I just got a 8gb iphone 3g with 3.1.2 sw. I learned through you guys that I can't get 3g speed so I cancelled my smartphone dataservice. I just want to make sure i switched to the right service plan. This is the description:
Unlimited Web + Unlimited Messages for phones: Get 100 MB of Web access, bundled with unlimited domestic messages. Includes 100 MB Web access and Unlimited domestic text, picture, e-mail, and instant messages
I'm payin $20 extra a month and dont want to spend anymore money than needed. Thanks in advance.

Yea you've made the right choice if you want unlimited data + text. I've had that plan for a while and it works flawlessly. internet2.voicestream.com as APN.

Yea...get really familiar with the Cydia apps because there are many add-ons which make your iPhone a true phone (ie. SBSettings, Backgrounder, notifier, kirikae, winterboard, etc...)

Hate to say it but Rock App is the easiest way to do it IMO. Rock App, avalable in cydia, is an app simular to cydia. When first launched it will ask you if you want to change your password, otherwise you will have to go through terminal to do it by:
Launch Terminal
type "su"
type in password "alpine"
type "passwd"
enter in new password
enter it again.Sent from my iPad

i removed openssh from my iphone b/c I don't know that much about it and don't want to mess anything up. But from what I understand, I have to have winspc or somehting that for my laptop and then access my iphone via ip address and change my password through that right? I just don't know why I would need to use openssh. Last time I tried to download something from cydia, it froze and I had to completley restore my iphone and lost all my apps, even the ones I paid for. Thats when I tried to start to learn more about this ssh thing

No, you'd change your password through terminal (an app you get in cydia). And yes, you have to be careful with what you download from Cydia (specially winterboard themes). It's happened to me as well, but as long as you download APT backup (which backs up all your Cydia apps) and backup your phone with iTunes, you'll be fine.

"reboot device"
I'd say one thing you should watch out for on Cydia is when you install something and you're prompted to reboot device. I've bricked my phone a couple of times by pressing reboot. You should always power down/ restart using the phone's power button.
