iPhone 3GS on T-Mobile
So I miss my iphone 3gs from AT&T and have been considering getting an unlocked one for T-Mobile, have a couple quick questions if everyone doesn't mind.
- Does MMS and Video MMS work on the 3gs with T-Mobile? If so, do I have to do anything specific with the phone? Is there a specific firmware they only work on?
- I saw that blackrain will unlock the 3gs, any major issues with the new 3.1.2?
- Also, any locations there is compatibility with jailbroken apps and 3.1.2, like winterboard?
Thanks so much for feedback, appreciate it!

MMS Video will be sloooooooow.. EDGE network is to blame, but don't expect to send it quickly.
All MMS features will work
No problems with any other JB apps
Blackra1n should be just fine..
Lovely

Just an input, if you do decide to get it don't fall for those "UNLOCKED iPHONE" crap. Some of them are software unlocked and people try to sell those for too much $$. Get the factory unlocked for that price if you are willing to spend it. Otherwise simply get a regular iPhone for cheaper and unlock it yourself. Factory unlocked are supposed to be more expensive but some horrible people out there will try to trick you and pretend like it's factory unlocked. ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE IF IT IS SOFTWARE UNLOCKED IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BY AN ALREADY UNLOCKED PHONE!
Be careful.

And don't buy a 3GS with the new bootloader, otherwise you'll only be able to do a tethered jailbreak(your phone will have to be plugged in every time you restart).

iPhone 3GS with T-Mobile -problem with internet
I just got a new iPhone 3GS and when I put my SIM in it gets internet fine with WiFi but even though I have the data plan it's not receiving internet on it's own. I was told by the seller to go to unlockit.com.nz from the phone and choose T-Mobile as the carrier but that's not even a valid site. A) Can someone assist me as to how I can fix this problem to get internet to work and B) Should I have just gotten a 2G iPhone since the 3G service doesn't work with T-Mobile's band? Thank you very much

lets cut to the chase. I have a 3gs on t-mobile works fine. I use pwned to unlock jailbreak. You could save some money and get a 2g or 3g phone since you can't use t-mobiles 3g anyhow. BUT the better processor and more memory keeps the 3gs from crashing MUCH better. I have few problems with the 3gs and the 2g always had issues.
just use pwned and start freshLast edited by imbuggin; 11-05-2009 at 02:08 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Use blackra1n to jailbreak and blacksn0w to unlock. If wifi still doesn't work, reset network settings. A guide for GeoHot's jailbreak is here:
Complete Guide: Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2G 3.1.2 Using Blackra1n | The iPhone Blog by Simon
Your issues are probably because you used pwned method. I'd use blackra1n if you want to save your battery life.Last edited by adp; 11-05-2009 at 04:24 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

That site is valid. You should be able to access it thru safari on your phone. Or you could go to settings, general, network, cellular data, and enter an apn (either internet2.voicestream.com or epc.tmobile.com) whichever works best for you and your Internet should be fine. And no if you already got a 3GS you don't need to think about getting 2G. Regardless of the lack of 3G availability for tmo on iPhone the 3GS will always be faster than the 2G because of the better processor.
You can also download the appropriate carrier bundle from cydia simply search t-mobile and choose the one that fits your plan (ie flexpay prepaid or just regular plan) and this will enter the apn data for you.

Don't worry about the website. The instructions I gave you should have fixed it. The carrier bundle is all you need to do check to see if it installed correctly by going into settings, general, network, cellular data and see if the APN field is filled. You can actually do this manually like I instructed but downloading the carrier bundle does it automatically. Turn your data roaming on if you find it's not working. I keep mine on just cuz it's always worked that way for some people it works when off too. Make sure your 3G is turned off (it must be turned off or it will not work) and test it out.

you may want to read a post before you respond to it
. I was stating a have few or no issues? Even a stock iphone has few issues. Also couldn't disagree more about what method you recommend. More people have issues with blackrain than they do with pwned.
feel free to hit the "thanks" buttone for correcting you

I agree. All iPhones come across some sort of issue. But also pwnagetool is the original tool for jb and has been perfected by the dev team so it's the predominant tool for mac users. One thing I like to point out is it really doesn't matter which tool they all do the same thing. Most people who come to have issues or problems during or after jb is most likely a user mistake. I truly believe if you know what you're doing 100% of the time you won't come across a problem. I've had plenty of problems on my iPhone but they were all a result of my own mistake but it's nothing a restore won't fix. When I do things exactly right tho I have no problems. Sometimes iPhones do bug out and it's nor the users fault but chances are it is. I find it dumb that I can jb and unlock with blackweather and it worked perfectly while someone on the same device as me using the exact same program can have th opposite experience. Unless blackra1n or any other jb tool has some sort of selective genius computer that says "hey I hate this user I'm going to brick his phone" or "this user is awesome I'll jb and unlock it in less than 5 minutes!"
Lol I talk a lot I know. But honestly it's just not a blame game to play. It's all about the user and his/her knowledge of the iPhone and it's complexity.

I'm not going to go into quotation games with you, but I can't seem to find where "a few OR NO" issues was written in your post. Just because there's been a few issues with the NEW blackra1n doesn't mean you can generalize. RC1 did have a lot of issues. But RC3 with the unlock runs pretty smooth for most people. If you don't believe me - go to the forums. Compare how many more people are satisfied with this unlock/jailbreak combination. Why was blacksn0w a lot more popular when it came out a few days ago than the mac-only pwnage method? I've used ultrasn0w before and I had issues with that. I switched to blackrain because it's the only option for me since I don't have a mac (and I think I can talk for a majority in that). If the pwnage method works great for you, then congratulations. I was trying to point out to a new iPhone user that the blackra1n method is A LOT simpler than the pwnage method.

Seriously guys... This isn't an issue to be argued about. Just chill out and enjoy that everyone can have an unlocked and jb 3.1.2 with pwnagetool or blackra1n. You're both right in a sense. It's just a misunderstanding. And yes blackra1n is great especially for people on windows. Rock on geohotz

If you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS, restore to 3.1.2 from iTunes, then go here to jailbreak/unlock:

Follow each step in the tutorial and your phone should work flawlessly.
Reset network settings if Wifi doesn't work initially. If I helped you out, please use the Thanks button ------------------------->
