Thinking of switchingt to T-mobile
For a few reasons...one in the area I live it AT&T signal sucks (even though I'm apparantly right smack in the middle of a 3G tower and an Edge tower). I'm technically spending $150 per month with AT&T ($120 cell, $30 home phone). I'm also switching because all of the people I would waste my minutes on are on T-Mobile. I have a few questions though if anyone is so kind in answering:
How is the speed on Edge? Is it the same as AT&T (approx 120-160 kpbs, compared to 400 kbps for 3G).
Any news from TMO about being able to use 3G in the future?
After unlocking iPhone is it as simple as putting in their sim card and using it?
Will I be able to test it out using my sisters TMO sim card with no extra costs on her account?
Thanks for the responses.

The speed is really dependend on your signal, but I would say about a third as fast as 3G. It's pretty much the same as AT&T's Edge speed.
T-Mobile has a 3G network. The only reason why the iPhone can't get it is because the frequency is locked in for AT&T, and that can't be changed. Unless the contract between Apple and AT&T is broken, I don't see it happening.
Yes, pretty much all you have to do is put in your SIM card and it works. Not to mention blackra1n/blacksn0w is the easiest unlock/JB released to date.
You can use any T-mobile SIM to test out, and there will be no extra charges. If you have a data plan with T-mobile, you have to enter the correct APN settings to access the cellular network.Last edited by adp; 11-04-2009 at 04:37 AM.

You will need to reset your data APN and your MMS settings.
Data APM is epc.tmobile.com
MMS settings;
APN epc.tmobile.com
MMSC mms.msg.eng.tmobile.com/mms/wapenc
Good luck.
Oh, yeah, these settings work fine with only the $5.99 Tzones 'data' plan.Last edited by Daughain; 11-04-2009 at 07:44 AM.

I was planning on doing the Even More Plus plan which will give me the same benefits as ATT (minus 3G) for $60 per month. I did make sure the rep knew I had an iPhone and she said it was still good with their new plans. I guess I'll turn of 3G for a few days and see how much I miss/need that speed but so far IMO 3G is not worth the extra $60 per month.
Has anyone had luck cancelling on ATT and having their cancellation fee totally wiped or cut in half? Mine so far is $125 and according to the rep it drops $5 every month.
Thanks for the info!

You have more chances of getting hit by a walrus driving a truck than getting T-zones as a new T-mobile customer. I recommend you get the $9.99 unlimited data or $19.99 unlimited data+text serivce. Just call T-mobile from a nokia/motorola type phone. The APN for these is internet2.voicestream.com

I did't know they canceled the Tzones option. Either way, epc.tmobile.com works just fine for edge speeds, even on the phone that has *no* data plan.

No wonder they dont like me. Haven't upgraded anything in years. So much for my test with canceling the tzones to see what happens to my data connection.

In my experience, T-Mobile EDGE is a good bit faster than AT&T's EDGE.
3G on T-Mobile is only possible with Apple's backing (for an iPhone 3G on 900/1700/2100)
Those plans are out now. Even More Plus has totally different rate structuring. It's Talk, Talk and Text, or Talk Text Web. Or Talk + Web.

It's not 19.99 for Web and Text. It's $30 now. Web unlimited is $25 and Messaging is $10.

The only way to get that option is to choose a non-smartphone.

Well if you already have an iPhone why would you choose to buy another smartphone? I didn't even choose a phone; I chose the SIM card which is free (which is what this person would choose) and it gave me the option for the $10 text and $10 data.

So I was talking to a CSR on the phone and he said that if I was to go to T-Mobile store they would unlock the phone for me...I found that a little strange.
