Check on steps to upgrade.

Hello all, i'm new to the Iphone scene. I have been reading alot of the posts in here so this isn't one of those newb how do i do this posts. I just need the experts to check over the information that i have learned from the scattered threads.

Here is what i have:
Iphone 3G 8bs
Ver 3.0
Firm 0.26.08
carrier 4.0
Unlocked
Jailbroken with Ultrasn0w
Using T-mobile no problems

My question is would it be a big ordeal if I upgraded to ver3.1, the reason i wish to upgrade is there are some apps i cannot use unless i have upgraded to 3.1

Will i lose functionality of my phone?

And from what i have read all i need to do is back my phone up on Itunes and install the ver3.1 then redo the jailbreak with Ultrasn0w again. i noted in a couple of other threads people stated a at&t sim is not needed. However doing so will erase my 3rd party apps i currently have on the phone which i can restore with a 3rd party app backup.

Thanks for any input, or if you could point me in the right direction. I'll be reading thru some more threads on the forums.

If you update through iTunes to 3.1 you won't be able to unlock again

In order to upgrade to 3.1 you need to download a custom ipsw and use that to upgrade to 3.1 not the ipsw you download from itunes. If you use the one from itunes you will not be able to unlock. With custom ones however, you will be able to unlock.

roger tracking all, i just found out reading way back in the forums. And customs are not posted here because the motto is patch not pirate, i'll just sit at 3.0 the only reason i wanted to upgrade is i purchased a couple of apps that do not work with 3.0 and hate that i can't do anything with them.

I have read that there is an app called UDIDFaker in Cydia. Not 100% because I have never used it, but it is meant for this purpose.

So i found a link to a How to Guide, and they have links to a custom IPSW. Pretty much i pick up on step 8 and follow the guide. Has anyone had any draw backs from up grading to 3.1?
