Voicemail Indicator stopped working / weird text messages instead

Starting this morning, instead of my voicemail indicator working correctly (red dot on top of the phone button), it is now stuck on (constant red dot, even when I have no new messages) and I get the following as a "text message," with no from: information (i get that it's really a service message that my phone is just delivering as a text message):

َ

(that's an upside down exclamation point, not an i)

the same message gets sent to me both when i receive a voicemail, and whenever i dial-into my voicemail.

I have a jailbroken 8GB iPhone 3G running 2.2.1 (5H11) with 2.28.00 baseband and yellowsn0w (running on t-mobile).

I also have the "T-Mobile US Carrier" bundle by BigBoss installed.

Everything worked perfectly until this morning, and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to my phone since the last time it was working.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Same Problem

Been using TMo on iphone for almost a year but this just happened this evening. Do you guys have $5.99 data plan?Called tech support, but have to call from a different phone. Haven't followed up yet. Tried Safari, but cannot access. Tried SIM on blackberry..cannot access Opera..only their Tmobile site. I think maybe they finally figured out we used their $5.99 plan to access website and trying to put a stop to it? Arrghhh!! Help

Ok.. I changed my APN and now my internet works but the text message when I call voicemail is still happening but the red indicator telling me I have a message is gone. I will try tech support again tomorrow.

Same Problem Here

I started having the same problem as well. I thought it was because I traveling. However I see we all have the problem. I did speak with T-mobile this morning and their answer was going to be to remove voice mail notification, I said no. If anyone finds a cure for this please post.

I talked to Tmo for over an hour last night.

They are having a glitch in the system which only affects iphone users.

How convenient.

I am experiencing the SAME problem on my unlocked 3g iphone FW 2.2.1 on T-Mobile!

This is so frustrating! My blank texts happens when I receive a voicemail (the voicemail notification dot no longer shows up now) and when I retrieve my voicemail, i get another blank text... and they are dated either Dec 31, 1969 or Sept. 4, 2012.

Here's a link to a thread in the Hackintosh Forum about this... apparently nearly everyone with an unlocked iphone (both 2g and 3g) on T-Mobile is experiencing the same issue.
Blank Text messages - Tmobile USA ??? What gives - Hackint0sh

I really hope this issues gets fixed! I can confirm that it's probably only happening with the iphone, because I also have an unlocked Nokia E71, which I tested out for this problem as well, and it's perfectly fine... no issues with that phone at all.

Are you all using this Big Boss Tmobile pack thing? I never used it and mine works fine... I just set the APN and everything else is default and works great.

Forgot to mention, the tmo rep told me this is ONLY affecting iPhone users (data plan does not matter).

If someone with a supported phone has this issue they can troubleshoot it and fix it, otherwise we wait for it to fix itself.

I am having the same issue. The dot seems to have gone away but I am still having the problem with the blank text message. The weirdest part is the date on the message is Sep.4, 2012 8:08 pm. The date on my phone says Feb. 24 , 2009 8:08 AM.

UPDATE:
I just spoke with T-mobile. Apparently they have been making updates to their software in the T-mobile system over the past few weeks. Part of the updates they did were to the speed up the internet on the network, but in the process they screwed up the voicemail notifier settings. They told me it is not a priority to fix it since the problem is only happening on phones they do not currently offer. I reminded them that there are many of us loyal customers out there that decided to stay with t-mobile and spend $$ on unlocked iphones instead of making the switch to AT&T and that they should try to fix the bug to avoid losing us. They said to give it a week and they will be making improvements to the software on their end.

The only solution for the time being is to have T-mobile disable the voicemail notification. In this case you will no longer receive any text messages or a dot indicator when you receive a voicemail. **I do suggest for everyone having the same problem to call T-mobile and remind them you are a loyal customer and would appreciate them fixing the bug. If they receive enough of us complaining about the same issue I am sure they will be more willing to fix the problem quicker. **

I just read on Hackint0sh forums that one person tried a new sim from Tmobile to fix the problem. Here is their post:
"So here is the fix to the issues. Since I was in the same boat as everyone else in this forum I went down to the local T-Mobile store and tried my SIM on one of there phones. (yes, I know, pain in butt) So that proved basically nothing other than, the T-Mobile software/locked phones did not exhibit the same problem. Then I recalled a post I read a long time ago about the voicemail indicator always showing up when you power on and off the iPhone. The solution to that was to replace the SIM card. So I asked the guy at the store to give me a new SIM since mine was a couple of years old anyway. What could it hurt, right? Anyway, that did the trick. As soon as I powered up the phone the Voicemail indicator went away and when I checked Voicemail, the blank messages stopped showing up. So everyone on here having the problem, get in your car and run on down to the T-Mobile store and take the, literally, 2 minutes to get a replacement SIM and all of your worries will be gone.
One thing to note, you will have to add the APN back into the phone to get data working again.
Enjoy!"

I have not personally tested this yet but I am on the way to T-mobile now to see if I will get the same success. If anyone else tries this method, please post your success or failure. Thanks.

I just stopped at the local t-mobile store and got a new sim card. I'm still getting the text messages whenever I get a new voicemail or check my voicemail. The new voicemail icon on the phone, however is now off and does not turn back on even when there is a new voicemail. So, changing the sim card basically does nothing for you unless your voicemail icon is normally on when you reboot your phone.

I agree. Tested the sim theory and it does nothing for the problem. All we can do is continue to call tmobile and urge them to fix the problem.
