Benefits of getting 3G vs. 2G
Hi...
Since us T-Mobile customers can't take advantage of using 3G speeds on the iPhone...what are the benefits of buying a 3G iPhone instead of just a 2G iPhone?
Thanks!

It looks sexier

Technically, you would still have a warranty, that would outlast whats left on a 2g (if any).
You would have a crappy GPS.

The 2g doesnt have an actual GPS unit in it. The 2g only uses cell tower triangulation to get your "area", but wont pinpoint your location, like the 3g.
The 2g "seems" slightly thicker because the 3g is curved more, making feel nicer in your hands. But, at the middle they are actually about the same exact thickness. The 3g is slightly wider than a 2g, but not enought to notice.
And yes, you can unlock a 2g with software.....the 2g has been unlockable for a long time now.

^Not really. Most of your "bugs" are software related, which is being fixed with every FW upgrade that Apple releases.
The 2g is actually a better "built" phone (speaking of hardware), with a better screen on it (IMO). And I have both, and have disassembled/repaired both.

OK, I have found an 8gb 2g that I'm going to pick up tomorrow. I already have the 5.99 tzones plan on my account. Can you lead to instructions on how to be able to use the internet on my iPhone. The phone I am getting is already unlocked and jailbroke and has Cedia installed. Also, do I need to be careful on upgrading my phone when new firmware upgrades come out for iTunes? Sorry if that's a really basic question but I am a total newbie to the iPhone. I just noticed that you have 2.1 on your 2g and not the latest 2.2 so that's why I asked.
Thanks again for all your help thus far CPJR!

to get tmobile tzones all you have to do is go into settings>general>cellular data network> and in apn put epc.tmobile.com and leave the rest blank and you are all set with tzones everything will work.
for upgrading couldn't be simplier. all you have to do is restore which will update it automatically and run quickpwn again. thats all you will ever have to do for updating. also i think its better to have a 2g phone since the baseband will never get updated from what i heard so it will always be able to be unlocked.

Cool thanks. I will try that tomorrow when I get the phone. A couple more questions if you can help. Is it possible to tether the phone to my laptop and use as a modem with that t-zones plan? Also, can I get my hotmail pushed to the phone like I did with my Blackberry?

um...for tethering im not the person to ask sorry. i know there is something called pdanet in cydia. which actually got updated. and you can just use it through usb. also for hotmail i don't think so but there is an app in the app store that will get hotmail working but i don't use push sorry. good luck with your iphone though!

HEADPHONE JACK on the 2G being sunk in .... the one thing that always bothers me. Had to buy a different FM mod cause i couldnt use my old one that worked great. And i like the metal casing even though i keep it in a plastic sleeve. The metal just seems a little more durable.

The battery life is WAY better when playing music and videos.
