You need to have your firmware "activated" before you update it on the iPhone. I know pwnage tool has this option when you pick whats installed in your firmware, but I am not sure where this is in quickpwn. I think this is it

and if I am right you would click the thumbs down red one..

This is just one step that I think would solve your problem.

I think this would work because I have down this the oppisite way where I did a thumbs down but used an att sim and then couldn't activate and would get no service until I "repatched" the firmware. Good luck let me know if this works for you.

My phone is on 2.1, my friend wanted me to jailbreak/unlock his iphone. I tried it on 2.2 and it didn't work at first. I tried this suggestion: Unlock Your iPhone 2G 2.2 Using QuickPwn and then it worked like a charm.

Don't "update" to 2.2, like smokey said, restore to 2.2. Download the firmware in the downloads section. Lucky for me when I restored, the phone retained the unlock portion, so all I had to do was jailbreak.
