Ok, got rid of the t-zones hack from bigboss, restarted my iphone, then changed the preferences.plist file with settings on the first page of this post, started safari, didn't work, checked email, worked, then opened the weather app, worked, went back to safari and everything is back to normal. It's true, be patient if it doesn't connect on the first try, and try the weather app or the stocks app before using safari. And on safari, don't just refresh, navigate to a new web address, for example google.com, worked for me, Thanks!

You made the changes under the incorrect section (ip2).
Like the instructions say, you need to make the changes under the ip1 section only.
Make that change and you should be all set.

I don't believe that IM chat programs will work with T-Zones.
T-Zones only allows access to standard web ports (80, 443, maybe others).
You will need to upgrade to the full T-Mobile Internet package for IM to work.

All T-Zones "hacks" do is allow T-Zones to work on a "normally unconfigurable" phone. Just because they are called "hacks" does not mean that they somehow give special access.
By default all access to T-Zones uses a limited proxy and will not allow access to most IM programs. I have yet to find a native iPhone IM app that works with T-Zones.

You will need to upgrade to the $19.99 Full Internet package on T-Mobile for IM apps to work.

Good Luck!

The quick steps are:
1. Install OpenSSH on iPhone.
2. From Windows PC, download WinSCP utility.
3. Use WinSCP to connect to iPhone over WiFi.
4. Locate preferences.plist file. (different locations between 1.1.4 or 2.0.x.
5. Edit preferences.plist file as described for your firmware version and save to iPhone.
6. Reboot iPhone.
7. Check APN in Settings; make sure correctly set to wap.voicestream.com
8. Turn off WiFi.
9. Try Weather and Stocks app first.
10. Then try Safari.

Report your result here, or let us know if you get stuck on any step.
Good Luck.
Sorry Freshster stuck already,
Where can I download WinSCP from? Do I have to uninstall anything from my phone? After connecting over WiFi is it easy to locate preferences... I really appreciate your help and patience.

Search for WinSCP on Google and click on the first link to download the utility.
You don't need to uninstall anything really, as long as you make sure the preferences.plist file looks exactly like the parts I documented.
The preferences.plist file is located at /private/var/preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist.
It is easy enough to find if you follow the path to the file.

Good Luck!

~WORKS on 2.0.2

As info:

I just tested this on v2.0.2 and can confirm that it WORKS! As noted in previous posts, the initial connection requires 4-5 min so be patient! The first thing I did was refresh stocks, once that updated everything else was working flawlessly including: weather, maps, safari, cydia, etc.

BIG THANKS to Freshster for the code and detailed setup instructions!

I downloaded it but it asks for (winscp login) host name, username, password, private key file, port #? Preferences.plist is located in winscp? Can I pay someone to do this? I'm serious.

I've been using t-zone for free (canceled the plan but can still connect, not a one time thing, happens each time I cancel the data plan because of no consistent connection) for about a year on my HTC T-mobile wing and later on my first gen iPhone, that is until recently. I followed the instruction on page 1 but still nothing works on EDGE (no connection for weather, stock, browser..., nothing). Here are what I noticed.
1. With and later without 5.99 plan with t-mobile, I always had connection, but not consistent connection, by that I mean I don't know where I can hook up with EDGE except several "hot spots", though "E" icon is always available, but once hooked up, it keeps on throughout that session, until I turn off the app using it or signal strength is 0. Anyone has this issue with your iphone on t-mobile t-zone? The key question here is: do you have relatively easy access to EDGE when phone signal is strong or half bar?
2. I use bossprefs to turn on/off EDGE, Wifi,..., even when I don't have any EDGE connection I 80% of the time can see EDGE picks up some kind of IP address, like: 25.255.165.50, does it mean anything to anyone?
3. Anyway or any app can help you determind/find out the strength of EDGE?

Update: Called T-mobile and it turned out my data plan was not turned on, once it is fixed, I pretty much have EDGE connection anywhere I go, and those online apps all work fine (exclude those everyone says won't work for EDGE)
Thanks.

If you use windows OS, I recommend this free app:
http://webisee.com/2008/04/20/iphone-pc-suite/
BTW, preferences.plist is on iPhone, WinSCP is the application which allows you to access your iphone files. iPhonePCSuite, the one I recommended, does much better job, plus a lot more other features.
