Alright, trying to get all of this figured out here. Not exactly dumb with computers but seem to have a problem figuring out this iphone stuff. Running T-Mobile on a pwned 2g 8.0GB running 2.0.2(5C1).
I have the 5.99 Tzone package and nothing else as far as internet packages with T-Mobile. Played around with it some and was able to check my email but thats it. So after coming across these forums and seeing all the success stories I gave it all a shot, uninstalled all of the bigboss tzone hacks and anything associated with setting my APN information. Also, I don't have a Edge settings in my General -> Network. I feel like I followed your steps correctly and still can't get it to work, now it says I'm not connected to a ceullar network. Here is my copy of preferences.plist - Please tell me where I messed up at

ericldtx,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but looks like you already got it working.
While my method in this thread should still work perfectly fine, I have decided to start using the epc.tmobile.com APN method. It's just easier because it requires no modification of the preferences.plist file.

I have a 2g phone with the 5.99 plan, it seems to work fine, most internet apps work fine, some don't. I am using bigboss tzone hacks, will this method make my iphone internet speed faster?

Hey freshster I keep having to shut down & reboot to get my connection fired up. Do you think if I went into my plist file & changed the string from wap.voicestream.com to epc.tmobile.com it would work better? In other words changing the plist file to incorporate the new apn setting. Thanks ahead of time.

APN won't save
After changing the preferences.plist, I have been unable to save my APN. I will enter in wap.voicestream.com go back to settings and go back in to cellular network and my APN isn't there. Any suggestions on what to do? I have iphone 3g jailbroken running 2.1 firmware.

Exactly.
I also recommend this method now.
I am using T-Zones and have never been charged for roaming, even when browsing overseas.
I would recommend resetting your Network Settings.
Then just use the epc.tmobile.com as the APN.

so i get the edge symbol but nothing works still?

Is this still expected to work with 3.1.3? I used this method long ago successfully and need to get it working again with a 2G at 3.1.3 firmware.

wow 2yr old bump.
Just enter epc.tmobile.com in your apn and use your internet. you dont need to do anything else.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I tried that approach with this and the APN that works for most people, but in my case I see the "E" and I do get a data IP assigned, but visiting any page in safari generates an error that I am not connected to the internet, so not knowing how to fix it, I thought may be this age old method could work. I just want to be able to access the t-zones home page and the other free content.

I use wap.voicestream.com for both apns and and i get the web2go portal that is free, and MMS
i didnt install a carrier bundle or anything, i edited com.apple.mms_overide.plist in var/mobile/library/preferences
replace the contents of com.apple.mms_overide.plist with
After doing this, go to your cellular data settings and make sure it says wap.voicestream.com in both apns, then rebootCode:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>MMS</key> <dict> <key>GroupModeEnabled</key> <false/> <key>MMSC</key> <string>http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc</string> <key>MaxMessageSize</key> <integer>1048576</integer> <key>MaxRecipients</key> <integer>10</integer> <key>MaxVideoBitrate</key> <integer>131072</integer> <key>Proxy</key> <string>216.155.165.50:8080</string> <key>UAProf</key> <string>http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf</string> <key>UserAgent</key> <string>SonyEricssonW800i/R1L</string> </dict> </dict> </plist>

@dale2, sorry for the late response, I couldn't try the steps immediately. I don't have this plist file at all, so I created it with the contents provided by you, but no new settings showed up under cellular data, even after a reboot. What could be wrong with my settings?
Update: I found a tweak called enablemms2g and got the MMS settings after installing it. I then made sure the APN for MMS is same as for data, but after a reboot, it is still the same issue. I get a data IP assigned, but when I try to go to http://wap.voicestream.com or any other site, I get a message that safari is connected to internet. This is really frustrating

you should not be trying to go to http://wap.voicestream.com,
you should be automatically redirected to the Web2Go porta
your data and mms apn are wap.voicesteam.com
are you on an iphone 2G?
that would explain why enablemms2G worked for you, but the method i posted earlier is for ios4, which the 2G cannot have
see my screenshot, the settings app is my cellular data and mms apn, and the other is where i'm redirected to in safari if i try to go anywhere. this is with no internet plan, just mms
