Default I'm REALLY CONFUSED about iPhone 3G!-PLEASE HELP!
OK, I've had a previous generation iPhone and had it unlocked and jailbroken to use on T-Mobile (which is my current carrier). I since sold the phone and switched to BlackBerry, but I'm bored with the phone and want to go back to iPhone. But I'm really confused on what I'm reading/seeing online...

The rumors state that the 3G iPhone CAN NOT be SIM unlocked (which I assume means you can't use any other carriers SIM card in the phone (T-Mobile for example) except for AT&T's SIM. Apparently, you can only jailbreak the phone to use unoffical apps (cydia, etc). But you have no phone service is you pop in a T-Mobile SIM!

Yet on youtube, I see video after video after video of people having unlocked 3G iPhones CLEARLY VISIBLE in the video, making calls, etc with the T-Mobile SIM. So what gives? And why would people go out and buy an iPhone, only to jailbreak the phone just so they can use unoffical apps on it but have no phone service...what am I missing here?

I really don't want to be forced to switch to AT&T as their prices are CRAZY HIGH and I would be paying double what I'm paying now with T-Mobile with less minutes...but I really want my iPhone back!

Can anyone please explain this to me? I'm getting tired of researching all of this online only to be more confused then I was before I started. I would appreciate some simple language on this.

    Thanks!

If you manage to get your hands on a 3G iphone, you need to understand that the only method to unlock it is by using a sim unlock. That method apparently has a bad rap for what it may do to the phone. Some say it could damage the phone, others say that it illegally hacks the network... I don't know.

The iPhone Dev Team has not yet released an unlock for the iPhone for various reasons, mostly because they are still working on it. It seems that it's not as simple as before. Although, the iPhone Dev Team has released their pwntool which can jailbreak the 3G iPhone.

As for why people want the iPhone only to use it as an iPod... is mind boggling.

Your best bet is to get another first generation iPhone, if you want to use it with TMobile now, otherwise just wait for a safer unlock method.

    My two dollars worth.

Australia (AUS?) and Japan I think are sold unlocked due to country laws.

I just bought an iphone from italy where they are being sold already unlocked by apple. As a matter of fact italy, hong kong and australia are the countries where you can buy them unlocked. I have my phone jailbroken and are using it with no problems at all. And the best part is I can upgrade the firmware without even fearing for it to get locked. Previously you had to wait for the dev team to come up with a new way for unlocking for each firmware. Of course the unlocked iphone is more expensive and yet you don't have to sign a contract either.
Don't be shy if I helped you use the Thanks button, I do it.

How much did the phone cost you to buy Unlocked? I was thinking about asking someone in Hong Kong to get one for me but I refuse to pay more than about 800 for one
