That's true, altho I believe he has a similar mindset to Dave as the XCode UI Extractor has been around since 2009 from what I can tell. So it was essentially extracting the .artwork files but Dave still offered a standalone NON XCode piece of software that did the job. Doug Dev said today that whether XCode can put those .car files back together with the correct offsets, byte alignment & header/s remains to be seen. If it doesn't then I welcome Doug's approach of a new standalone tool.

    Useless bit of information

The Settings Icons ([email protected] file)

    iOS6 - [email protected]k file contains 31 icons.

After looking thru iOS7's Settings plist I found it hadn't changed a lot.

    iOS7 - [email protected]k file contains 36 icons.

Also in iOS7 only about 11 of the icons used potentially in the Settings table are viewable.

Am working in with Doug Dev (yes he asked me tonight to forward on the files) to help extracting them.

    Will keep ya's posted...

Hi guys, here's a quick email from Dave Peck about the [email protected]k file.

    Hi Matt,

You have things basically right. There are two different file formats for .artwork files. I called them Legacy (which is generally for files up to iOS 5, although some iOS 6 files are in there too) and Modern (which is most iOS 6.)

Legacy files need a corresponding JSON file. The JSON file describes the image names, sizes, whether they're greyscale or not, and byte offsets into the .artwork file.

Modern files have their own manifest built-in, so there's no need for a separate JSON file.

If I remember, [email protected]k is not a Modern file. The catch is that it didn't look to me like a Legacy-style file, either. It might be, but I wasn't sure -- and, assuming it is a Legacy file, I could never figure out how to get the right data to create a JSON file for it anyway. I don't think the macho-binary stuff is at all useful in this case.

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Hi Dave

Hope you are well! Have not been hearing too much from you on Twitter?

Thought I would flick you a email with what Ive been doing. More specifically towards the dreaded [email protected]k file.

I have been reading lots and lots of your Python scripts! Even managed to go back in time ;-) & find your "generate-from-macho-binary.py" scripts etc. I have been using Hex fiend and comparing a lot of your JSON files for the "Legacy artwork files" as well.

So from the understanding ive managed to gather is IF a .artwork file is a "Legacy" type artwork file a JSON file is needed with the metadata (image name, width, height, offset and alpha). I have been comparing the [email protected]k and AssistantMic-163@1x~ipad.artwork (ipad mini) files. These are both iOS6 files
but Legacy artwork files that do not contain the metadata so im guessing you had to crack the mach-o binary
    for the above two files.

I guess where Im heading with this is, firstly determining what .artwork files are classed as Legacy vs Modern artwork files.

That's where I am at with the [email protected]k file, i know it contains 31 icons at 58x58pixels, some of those icons are
greyscale, some are RGBA. I know the exact names for these icons and the byte count is 523,378.

When i run your iOS-artwork.py script it errors out saying

FAIL This tool does not currently support "Path to .artwork file"

When I got this error message it made me think, maybe it NEEDS the JSON file to refer to on the extract process for the metadata.

Am I potentially correct there? Or wildy wrong?

If it needs the JSON file ill need to install Macholib im guessing and run your "generate-from-macho-binary.py" file the only thing well probably only thing i lost on is in the script you talk about UIKit binary?

Do you have any advice? no one i know is really able to help, my mate Doug who helped with the RBGA fix said maybe.

Will it be a huge job to extract 31pngs from the [email protected]k file???

Thanks for all your help so far.

    Matt

I don't think Dave has any idea where to go with it either. I'm going to reassess. At least I was kinda on the right path. It's deeper than I've ever gone with the .artwork stuff with making your own JSON files!

If u guys want to pull apart the unix file like SpringBoard apart even further at root level I found using otool (mac only) strips it back to the raw hexadecimal info etc. holy hell it blew me away.
Installed it via Xcode "Command line tools" then open Terminal & just type "otool -l" without the quotation marks.
This spits out about 30 different options you can use otool to grab the data u require. There's some serious root level stuff going on with that tool. I was hoping to use it to peel away some info on the iconCache.artwork file. It doesn't work on it. Darn it. I'm now going down the route of Python on my mac. Having a few issues with the $PATH variable.
Anyone good at explaining that laymans terms?

FYI Im using the default Python 2.7.2 that ships with Mountain Lion. I added Dave Peck's artwork tidbits & iOS-artwork.py & the [email protected]k file to the 2.7 folder

The address for the Python is :/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7

    So I typed
    cd /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7

    Then

    iOS-artwork.py export -a System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/[email protected] -d System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Test

Hit enter & I get this error msg

    -bash: iOS-artwork.py: command not found

So I'm guessing the $PATH is wrong hence the error msg.

    So...I typed in Terminal

    echo $PATH

    It showed

    /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin/usr/sbin:/sbin:/use/local/bin

Seems like a lot...anyone got any ideas?

Turns out all I was missing was the "Path/to/the/iOS-artwork.py/file"

So all I did in Terminal was

Drag the iOS.artwork.py in Terminal then type "export-a" then dropped the [email protected] into Terminal then typed "-d" then dropped the Test folder (location I want the pngs to end up) into Terminal & hit enter

    /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/iOS-artwork.py export -a /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/[email protected] -d /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Test

and then BOOM! Extracting .artwork files on my Mac (10.8.4)

    -screen-shot-2013-12-10-7.01.31-am.png

    and it recompiles fine!

    Now the next step...

No worries bro! Using Terminal is a wee bit different than CMD. At least I can toggle between the two! Match_stic & I are moving onto using Macholib with Python.
Dave used this to read the Legacy artwork files

    Or

macholib can be used to analyze and edit Mach-O headers, the executable format used by Mac OS X.

It's typically used as a dependency analysis tool, and also to rewrite dylib references in Mach-O headers to be @executable_path relative.

Though this tool targets a platform specific file format, it is pure python code that is platform and endian independent.

We really are seeing just how deep the rabbit hole really goes ATM!

@mcooper - did u manage to fix your wifi issue on your i5? I didn't, I presume it's an issue with the Keychain files in /var/Keychains

Anyways as you guys know I've been running password free wifi (& probably for the neighbours too!) - Not Ideal really. Last nite while I was logged into my router as admin I stumbled across MAC Address filtering. Out of curiosity I entered my i5's MAC address l(every device manufactured has this & its a 6 pair of hexadecimal values) via my laptop clicked apply changes & it rebooted the Router. After that only my i5 had access to my password free wifi. It even severed my laptop's connection. So essentially only those authorised MAC Addresses entered into the router are allowed to use the wifi whether there is a password or not. I know it's not ideal but it's better than turning the wifi on/off when I get home or leave the house. So I tested this on my iPad & other devices & can confirm there is no wifi connectivity possible via MAC address filtering even if there is no password on the wifi.

See if that approach will work for you mcooper if need be.

    To find on your iDevice
    Settings>General>About>WiFi Address

    Windows PC
Open CMD type "ipconfig/all" without the quotation marks & hit enter.
