Finally the tools are at your disposal to extract/recompile your own Settings icons.

    SUPPORTS:

    iOS 6.0 - 6.1.X - Retina (32 icons) & NON-Retina (32 icons)
    iOS 7.0 - Retina (37 icons) & NON-Retina (37 icons)
    iOS 7.1 - Retina (39 icons) & NON-Retina (38 icons)

included are the .artwork files 6.1/7.0/7.1 AND .json scripts to extract/recompile

Turns out there were errors in my .json scripts that caused Dave Peck's iOS Extractor tool to fail.

I have now decided to post all the iconCache tools so that the iCommunity can now extract/recompile their own icons.

What you need to do, FIRST grab the "iconCache_Files ZIP here

OPEN the Folder of desired "iconCache .artwork" you wish to recompile or extract.

e.g If you want to recompile for 7.0.X OPEN the "7.0_iconCache_Files"

Inside your Python folder locate the "legacy_metadata" Folder & OPEN it.

Copy OR DRAG the corresponding ".json" files into the "legacy_metadata" Folder.

THEN "Copy" OR "DRAG" the "iconCache .artwork" files into your main Python folder.

    EXPORTING

To get the images out of a .artwork file, you export them. This fills a directory of your choosing with easily editable PNG files.
To export, run the tool as follows:

    ./iOS-artwork.py export -a /path/to/artwork_file.artwork -d /path/to/export_directory/

That's all there is to it!

    CREATING

It is equally easy to turn a directory full of PNGs into a new .artwork file.
To create a new .artwork file, run the tool as follows:

    ./iOS-artwork.py create -a /path/to/original_artwork_file.artwork -d /path/to/import_directory/ -c created_artwork_file.artwork

This will read all the PNGs in the import_directory directory and place them in the file named created_artwork_file.artwork.
    Again, easy!

You may wonder why you have to supply the original .artwork file in this example. That's because the images we import to the newly created .artwork must have the
same dimensions and color space as the original -- otherwise iOS is likely to be unhappy with you.

    ***Theme Creators***

Please observe dimensions of the icons AND names AND total icon count.

For the "RETINA" (HD) 7.0 "iconCache" .artwork file to be created it needs ALL 37 icons @ 58 x 58 pixels
and NAMED EXACTLY as per the icons provided otherwise it will error out!

    e.g [email protected] @ 58x58 pixels

For "NON-RETINA" (SD) 7.0 "iconCache" .artwork file to be created it needs 37 icons @ 29 x 29 pixels
and NAMED EXACTLY as per the icons provided otherwise it will error out!

    e.g AirplaneMode.png @ 29x29 pixels

    ***HAPPY THEMEING***

    ***iconCache .artwork update***

Have been speaking to Dave Peck over the weekend (the Developer who built the "iOS-extractor tool") and here are some of his responses to my email queries I had.

Dave's responses are in "black" & my queries are in "blue"!

He might actually push my findings e.g the 6 - 8 iconCache .JSON files I wrote to his Github if all checks out which would be a GREAT thing for all users of this tool as it already requires a bit to set up without downloading my extra scripts.

    Throwback to iOS5 era!

For some reason tonight I decided to revisit a arch enemy in the .artwork land. What file was this? The AssistantMic.artwork file! Siri 5X!
Yes if you guessed correctly a "LEGACY" .artwork file! e.g requires a JSON file to extract! There was a workaround with using an old ancient
third party "iphone-artwork.py" script but was a bit more different to use.

Here's however a typical error message you got if you used Dave's extractor tool & the "iOS-artwork.py" script

iOS .ARTWORK file Extractor (with Tutorial)-siri_5x_no_extract.png

I had a look in my "legacy_metadata" folder inside my Python main folder...I could not see an "AssistantMic.artwork-26686464.json" in the folder.
There was an "[email protected]" but that is for SIRI 6X! Both the SIRI 5X & 6X .artwork files are identical in byte size
    e.g 26686464 bytes and also image count = 181. They are named different AssistantMic.artwork (5X) & [email protected]k (6X) AND
the image names are slightly different.

So in short I re-wrote the 6X version to suit the 5X version and BOOM! ***Extracted***

I will also send this JSON to Dave so he can push these JSON's to his Github iOS-extractor zip download.

iOS .ARTWORK file Extractor (with Tutorial)-siri_5x_extract.png

That ONLY leaves SIRI 7X to extract...To Be Continued...

That's awesome you're getting so good at this stuff, Jato. Once Dave gets ahold of it did he say he'll update his extractor tool? (I'm not sure what pushing stuff to Github means)

    Hey "Jason"

YES!! Just tested the recompile & works beautifully! Altho I do not have a 5X SIRI iDevice to test on!

Yuh he is hoping too! "Pushing" in Dev lingo is "updating" his tools for "users" to download the updated versions!

There is a few wee other things I'd like to do with the .artwork side of things but they are fairly difficult.

One is to "rewrite" the "header" section 6X [email protected]k files! Remember these are "modern" .artwork files.

So as long as we can update the header to the png dimensions e.g 88px by 2px (Nav bars) which equal 176 pixels & multiplied by 4 for RGBA byte conversion = 704bytes.

The way the header is packed, it tells the iOS that "x" amount (byte offset) into the Shared .artwork file the UI Nav bar file starts & is spread across 704 bytes only.

    So my thoughts ARE how about a 88x640 pixel file = 56320 pixels * 4 = 225,280 bytes.

It would work the same way as Doug Dev did with adding "RGBA" data to 6X modern .artwork files & updating the header with the colour space of RGBA versus greyscale.

I realise .artwork modding is on the way out but it's still an area which interests me.

The other idea I would like to try & have tried IS, updating the iconCache .artwork "footer" (index) with my own files that the iOS will accept & NOT reject.

e.g I have recompiled the WinterBoard icon into the iconCache & called on it successfully here!

    ImageUploadedByModMyi1397733109.439754.jpg

These mods are well & above what Dave ever expected of his iOS extractor tool but I think these ideas should have been implemented before 7X!

Pity it took me this long to fully understand how the .artwork files works & how they could have been potentially manipulated!

Why is it on the way out? Nobody found a way to theme settings icons with winterboard in ios7. Is that going to change with ios8?

The first question I ever asked in this thread - I'll ask again today. Because I truly don't know the answer.. Not to be a smart-*** or denigrate all the hours Jato has spent learning .artwork and .car - but WHY do we need to manually theme when Winterboard can already hook into everything we need with SB icons and settings icons and 70% of UI elements. Is it just to get at that last 30% of UI made untouchable by Winterboard in iOS 7?

Reason I'm confused is - Jato keeps showing pictures of Settings icons he's changed as a result of lots of decompiling and recompiling - and yet I have access in all my themes to settings icons via WB..

So - indulge me.. please with some "re-education"..
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

Winterboard has access to all settings icons except the stock iOS ones. Through Jato's work with the extraction tool, we are able to theme the stock settings icons. If your theme has them themed already, it was made possible through this method and themed before a public release.

All of my themes have all Apple Stock settings icons themed via WB. I was pretty sure WB itself already hooked into the proper .car to get the job done. I don't believe the modders had to use any compiling recompiling techniques - or the theme .deb would have had to replace .car files already on our phones.

Are you saying that all theme modders who have modded Apple stock settings icons - came to Jato and asked him to do it for them?
