i think you might be putfilein in the wrong place. try this comand after you put your pick in the phonedmg folder.
putfile /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/SBDockBG2.png

My latest dock
Here is the Dock I am using for my brushed metal theme. All you need to do is upload this icon that you can't see (transparent .png 60x60) for phone, mail, safari and ipod (It is transparent). I am working on a few other embedded docks now. Thanks to Kate England for the Iphonica icons, they worked great with this one. Next I am getting into some neater stuff now that I can in a sense image map the doc.

do you cd to the directory then do a putfile nameoffile.xxx? I have noticed that if you just do a putfile /path/to/app/ it drops it in the root directory. do an ls and see if you see it in the root directory, if so, that is your problem.

Yeah, the first ringtone I uploaded wouldn't work, so I couldn't figure it out until I went back into the iphone and found it in the root directory. I tested it a few times and if I am not in the directory to where it needs to end up, well, it doesn't end up their
Who knows, running the latest jailbreak and etc. I could just be a complete idiot, but been working with GNU/Linux and FreeBSD for years, so I hope not, maybe my wife whacked me in the head the other night while I was sleeping.
