Automatic lightening of icons

I have an iPhone 3G S (not jailbroken). I'm using icons from the QS07 theme by ikon (an amazingly sexy theme, btw). The icons are black, but when I try to use them with certain apps on the home screen, they come up gray with an added "shiny" effect. It appears either the app or the operating system is automatically adding this effect to certain apps' icons, but not others.

Is there any way to change this without jailbreaking it? Is there any way to change this with jailbreaking it?
