How Do I Take a Picture and create an Icon?

Can someone direct me to a way to make my picture into an icon. I can edit the size down to the proper size, but it always has a black or white box around it. I want the icons to be the shape of the picture not just a square. I'll attach 1 pic to use as an example.

I have 12 beer logos i'm dying to create a theme with, but haven't found anyone to convert them so I figured i'd give it a shot.

In Photo Shop I just duplicated the layer since the original was locked, then I removed the white background, re-sized to 60x60, then just "save for web and devises".

Awesome, I unfortunately don't have photoshop, do you know of a free program that can do these things or is there a free version of photoshop out there ? Sorry for the 20 questions.

Google "Gimp" it is free.
