Default SMS Tone Name Changing In 3.1.2?

I've been working on putting on custom SMS tones on my iPhone... Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to change the names of the tones. Was this ability lost in the 3.1.2 update or am I just kinda... being dumb

I've google various things trying to find an answer but haven't been successful...

Anybody have any an answer for me?

...I was able to do it before 3.1.2 and for some reason my files just will not work.

You can't change the names, only the file. Replace an existing SMS sound file with your sound with the same name. Verify permissions and ownerships .. and reboot.

I disagree. You can not change names --- only the file.

In /System/Library/Audio/UISounds, SMS sounds are named sms-received1.caf (2,3,4,5,6,etc). A new SMS sound must replace one of these.

Cool, Thanx. The name change feature was lost in the update right? Anybody, have any idea why we can't it anymore? I'm just curious.

I've never been able to add (or use) a different SMS name (since 1.1.4). That was one of the very first things I wanted to do with my original 2G --- but could not!! (Thank you Apple ). Of course you can use Winterboard to add a new sound (which really just replaces an existing one), however I always do it manually --- SSH into the folder, rename an ugly sound, and add my new one using the ugly sounds name

You might be remembering ring-tones. They can be created and truly added with iTunes

    Sorry dude,

    1. SSH into Applications/Preferences.app/English.lproj/Sounds.strings
    2. Take that Sounds.strings and save it to your comp
    3. Convert that file here: http://iappcat.com/plist/bin2xml
    4. Open that file with notepad
    5. Rename the SMS names. You'll see the original names (Bell, Horn, etc.) near ALTERNATE
    6. Copy that converted file back into the original location on the phone. If, when you converted the file, you changed the name, then just rename it 'Sounds.strings' (minus the quotation marks).
    7. Restart the phone.

Just use it in a theme by itself. Then you can turn the theme on and off.

Having trouble with craeting the Theme. I can change the file, I us PC Suite to ssh into the iPhone. The problem is that there is an Authorized user number that needs to be associated with every file and folder on the iPhone. I need to know what they are so I can properly set it up to be recognized. Can anyone help?
