Default Help with aif/caf sounds and loudness

Trying my first attempt at creating a theme for myself.

If have an mp3 of a particular artist and I wanted a small piece of it to use an the unlock sound.
Working on a WinXP machine... I used Audacity to extract that small piece. Using Audacity, I also converted it to a aif file, renamed it to caf and SSH'd it over to my iPhone.

Unlock sound worked ok, but it was unusually loud. Having brought down the volume on the iPhone and in the setting, it was still extremely loud.

Within Audacity, you can lower the output volume... so I did that. The resulting aif file, when played, was considerably softer... when played on my PC. But once over on the iPhone, it was still the loud. The same loudness as before.

I have also used iTunes and some free converter... and the resulting files, once over on the iPhone, are still extremely loud!

I was considering it was the original mp3 file. But I can create a low sounding aif file when played on the PC. Yet once once over on the iPhone, still loud.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? Or better yet, how different why to do this?

Any help would be appreciated... thanks!

at a guess - the quality level / kbits of mp3 needs to be dropped before conversion?

I think I had this problem once when making a custom sms tone, am sure I just dropped the quality of the original file & maybe tried halving maximum volume level, and then resaved as aiff, then converted to .caf
