Any file (as long as correct type) can be used for system sounds.

1: Back up the UISounds folder on your iPhone. Copy it to your desktop.
2: Save your custom sound file as an AIFF (.aif or .aiff).
3: Name the file in accordance to the iPhone system sound file, and change the file extension from .aif/.aiff to .caf.
4: Copy your custom sound file to the UISounds folder and replace the existing file. You may need to reboot the phone to get the change to take effect.

This can of course be done through WinterBoard, which is a safer bet. I don't use WinterBoard anymore, so I do it manually.

But, that said, go for it!
Until the next time… And if I help you out, give me a "Thanks!" Thanks!

so do you just rename the extension or does it have to be converted?

I think .caf and aif's of the sort are one of the few music files where you can just change the extension. I would say, change the extension for one and activate it via Winterboard, if that's what you use, and if it doesn't work, convert would probably be the next best step.

Thanks I'll try that. If it doesn't work do you know of any good audio conversion software for windows?

I don't know of any personally so I can't recommend anything particular. You could ask someone else who might know or just guess at one you think may be useful.
