hey guys, I'm new here - once I have downloaded a theme to my desktop, how do I get it to my phone?

it's really easy. Read about using Winscp in the link provided above. install open ssh from Cydia and just have a look. You'll be glad you did.
If your a newb, may I suggest that you read the thread called "[Official] show off your theme thread" May take a while but it will give you some great ideas and also teach you a ton. It should be mandatory for new people to modding their iPhone.
If you have problems you can always ask and members are happy to help.
You also can do a search here for what your looking for too.

It took a lot of reading to figure it out for myself... Jail broke my phone last week...

But look at SSH... start there

or as an alternative of using SSH you can search for the theme in Cydia if you have Wireless internet.

ok guys, so I have downloaded a theme from this site as a zip file and tried to upload to my phone via discovery but it doesn't unzip it there my phone doesn't see it. what next?

you'll need to un-zip the file before installing it on your iPhone
