I loved Customize too but have grown to love Winterboard. I compile a lot of my own skins, mainly piecing together bits from other themes. With Customize, all the file names needed changing. With Winterboard, the filenames and folder structure is pretty intuitive (at least to me). I found that as long as I keep the number of themes downloaded on my iphone to a minimum, i have few issues with Winterboard. thing what messes people up is having several themes set in various order, which is why i complie into one theme. I had issues when it first was released but not since. I always reboot the phone after installing a Winterboard upgrade and wait for the little spinning wheel to finish before pressing the respring or return to Cydia after installing ANY app.
As far as Spicy Chicken (the Customize developer), I think he started letting the ball drop a month or so before his web site went away. I think he fist was astudent so during exams and such he was unable to put the time in understandably, and then i think i remember he was moving or something right around the time of one of the firmware releases (2.1 I think). Then Saurik released Winterboard to fill the gap and that was it. all of a sudden the customizeapp website was gone.
All I can say is that there are people that have issues with Winterboard, but many of us get it working just fine. I held on to Customize as long as i could too, all my themese were in Customize format and i had to wait until i had time to recompile to work with Winterboard. Now that I have learned the ins and outs i love Winterboard. Any issues with it in my experience besides 'too many" themes installed, have to do with how you install it and certain other apps to begin with ( foe me, Five icon Dock and Categories). I had a mess of issues upgrading to 2.1 and figured out to install those above mentioned apps one at a time and reboot the iPhone between each nstallation. Annoying, but my phone runs smoothly and is stable.

I emailed spicychicken. He responded pretty much by saying that the issue is time. He said he is looking for someone to hire to keep developing and maintaining customize. Hopefully we see a better upgraded customize soon.
