just install winterboard. then find a wallpaper you want and name it Wallpaper.png
then create a folder and name it Wallpaperonly.theme and put that file in there.
ssh into the phone and put this folder in "library\themes"
it wont slow your phone down. if you start adding more stuff youll get a MINOR slow down but me personally i just have a wallpaper theme right now and my phone runs awesome. you can use this program called springroll instead of winterboard but i dont recomend it. feel free to ask any other questionsThe beatings will continue until morale improves.

my whole point is if it can be done without winterboard ? I'm currently doing exactly what you suggested, seems to be fine. I've read that winterboard slows everything down though. thanks.

i think cricketlang is right.
it wont slow down noticeably if you just put one theme on
because then it is using less memory. problems begin when you get many themes (even not active ones)

if you dont want to use winterboard at all use springroll. i really think its buggy as hell but if you want to try it go for it. actually i dont even know if springroll was ever updated to have the background feature. if you just have the single theme installed as a wallpaper only your fine. im running winterboard with very minor performance issues. i love it and its stable and safe

what I would like to know is how the heck does Winterboard do it ? I'd like to copy how winterboard does it but do it manually myself without winterboard. i don't change my background that often, i wouldn't mind ssh'ing in once in a while to change the background manually.

There is no manual way, even with SSH. There is no original background image that winterboard replaces.

there is no original background image, therefore nothing to replace. Winterboard provides a script that solves that problem.

Actually I find that using a wallpaper in winterboard is the first addition that slows your phone down, I have a winterboard theme with no wallpaper just icons and it runs great!! but once I slap a wallpaper back there its starts to lag.

do some searching around. i dont think its possible and if it is its gonna be hard to do. just use winterboard. im telling you. if you mess something up with the default springboard settings you will only get the SWOD. deal with the SUPER minor lag. i have my theme and performance is AWESOME.

I know I am posting over 6 months later, but its amazing how no one can answer this question. There has to be a location of the Wallpaper.png file. When I write my themes for winterboard the wallpaper.png file just goes in the first folder. Question is, where do these files in the main folder of the theme post into on the phone. Their must be a location.....

You are wrong, there DOESNT have to be a wallpaper.png. There is NO wallpaper without winterboard... there is just no image there, Winterboard is the ONLY tool that will allow an image to be there. And this question has been answered countless times. NO winterboard = no wallpaper.

Well, I personally would only want to change the color code for the wallpaper, if it is in that form say I am guessing for now its #000000 (black), I want to change it to #C40909 (maroon) if it is possible.
Can someone help me out here? please.
Thanks.Last edited by mythamp; 06-24-2009 at 03:43 AM.
