Can A Theme Be Installed Manually Without Winterboard?

I've pretty much decided to trash Winterboard because of the noticeable lag/slow down of the phone, I really noticed the difference when I upgraded to the 2.2 FW, the phone was SO much quicker. So I was wondering if there's a way to theme the phone up through SSH without using Winterboard, and if the speed of the phone will remain the same as a stock iPhone. And if so, a link to a guide or something that shows all the directories and where everything would be placed and such. Thanks.

im on 2.2 w/ winterboard also. My barely seems slower. I have everything in one theme/folder in winter and im running a bunch of widgets and about 65 games. Maybe you should change whatever you can without winterboard and just put all the left overs in one theme like me. I think you can pretty much change everything on the phone without winterboard except the springboards wallpaper.

Well, I looked all through SSH and I didn't really get anywhere. You'd have to know all of the directories and file names in order to come out with a full theme replacing all the original graphics, which I don't know.

Yes, you can theme your phone without winterboard. It is a pain in the butt.

I can't see where it would take anymore time than making a theme from scratch in photoshop. If you already have all of the theme folders then you are one step ahead of the game.

i agree with you 100%.

i had to test my theory a few times but it is definitely winterboard that slows down my iphone. i restored and then went a few days just with the standard phone then over a few weeks i added and app every couple of days like intelliscreen, PDANet, and i saw no change in performance until i installed winterboard. within a few days of winterboard there was a noticeable difference in my performance. it was really clear when i would try to open up text messaging.

i have just manually changed a few things i really dont like about the standard GUI.

I agree.. WinterBoard = FAIL its a great program and i've had it installed a couple of times but i cannot deal with its selfish behavior.. it is a resource whore! i'd love to know why just even installing the app slows down the phone so much regardless of if you even theme it or not.. saurik needs to get in there and tweak some stuff to get it to run better, a change of icons shouldnt' slow down the phone that much cause when you SSH in and change the icons and dock there is no difference in performance like there is with WB, i just wish we could change wallpapers without WB

I too would like to accomplish the same without Winterboard. Right now I'm trying to use all the files from the Lea theme

Things that did work:
- Icons for every app
- Icons in the status bar
- Dock
- SMS
- Some buttons on the keypad (the images which aren't included in the artwork)
- the appearing screen when opening apps
- sounds

Things I couldn't manage to make it work were:
- add date to status bar
- change color of text in status bar
- change colors of top bars in applications
- wallpaper
- keyboard and other UI related things

I know the latter can be altered by exporting the png's from the artwork, but after doing so, I found out they're just numbered and don't have any specific file names, meaning there's no way of telling what the image is, unless I opened it. First of all, it's too much work (unless there's some easier way to accomplish this) and second it's likely I'd have to do it all over again with every firmware update.

I found it quite easy to edit the themes for Winterboard, but I have a lot of trouble with the things listed above. Does anyone know how Winterboard applies certain files from themes so I can find out how to apply them myself?

Guess I wasn't the only one that felt the same about it. Themes are the only reason I had my phone jailbroken, but performance edged out the cool looks for me. So until Winterboard can be used with the same performance as without it [which I doubt will ever happen] or theming up the phone manually through SSH becomes a little easier, then I'll jailbreak my phone again.

no jailbreak? i would seriously miss:

1. PDANet- i dont need it much but when i do it is handy as can be.

2. intelliscreen - one of my favorite apps of all time. to be able to see my mail, text, weather, sports scores, etc... without even having to unlock the phone is great. plus i use it to unlock the phone and take me straight to the app i want from the lock screen.

3. SSH - changing the dock for starters. this is a big one for me since the standard dock really bothers me. i will also include icons, text alerts, etc.. in this one.
i could name a few more that i really need jailbreak for but those are essentials to me.

I saw the same problems on my phone. I love what Winterboard can do, but putting my phone fully themed next to my wife's virgin phone, it's like night and day. I dug in a little deeper with my friend top and saw some startling things. Without WB, but with Intelliscreen, Status Notifier, SBSettings, SB's memory usage hovered between 9-11MB. When I installed WB with NO themes turned on, memory usage for SB shot up to 23-24MB. Next, I installed my standard theme which themed every app icon, added weather to the homescreen and that's about it and memory usage shot up again to 34MB! That's half of the memory available on the phone! No wonder Safari and Intelliscreen kept crashing.

I immediately removed WB and everything went back to a happy 9-11MB. Not being satisfied with the default icons and dock, I wrote a quick a dirty script that will take a "theme" (I put it in quotes because it's not a standard WB theme format), backup the current files and copy the theme files into the right place. So far, I only have it working for apps that have their icons named icon.png. I plan on enhancing it as I figure out better ways to locate the files. I'd be thrilled if someone could write a SB frontend for it. I just don't have the OSX coding experience or the time.

If anyone wants the current script I have, let me know and I'll post it up here.

I've never installed intelliscreen, hm, think you could possibly post up some screen shots of it? If I was able to change the background as well, then I'd jailbreak it again, the dock doesn't really bother me much, and I'm fine with default alert sounds. I also wish my photoshop skills were up to par, because I have 8 pages of apps [I know categories would fix this, but I like having all the pages with all the apps ordered specifically for some reason] and it would be cool if I could photoshop all of my custom icons to fit nicely with w/e else I have done to the phone.

You guys are sadly mistaking if you think Winterboard slows the phone down. You need to read a little research and you'll find out the true culprits.
