I have been looking high and low and i know i will get mad flamed for wanting this without winterboard but in my opinion winterboard lagged my iPod Touch quite abit (while others may not notice a slow down I have). I'm wondering if someone has found a way to change the black background (after farting around in SSH I found not a thing).

Try this..Go to private/var/mobile/Library and you will see a file called LockBackground.jpg. Backup that file and name your new wallpaper the same. SSH it onto your phone.

that wont change the SB background. AFAIK the ONLY way to do that is with Winterboard

Thanks bud for your attempt but that is the image that corresponds to the Lock Background. I am talking of the one on the springboard (behind the Application icons)

That is a color (000000), not an image. WinterBoard actively displays a background behind the icons. You might be able to change the BG color (to, say, solid red: FF0000), but SpringBoard just isn't capable of displaying a picture as the BG without help from WinterBoard.
