How do you keep your contacts and personal info after loading cyndia and installer? I used winpwn.

when you connect your iphone it should say "restore from......backup"
click yes and there all back on if you didn't do this there all lost forever sorry

That is correct.

I had to restore my 1st gen iPhone for the 1st time last week, got stuck on the boot logo loop...

Anyway when I finished restoring and opened iTunes there was a msg showing me the name I had previously given to my phone.

After synching all the contacts were there, also some small configs.

Even if you have to setup your iPhone as a new device...you still retain a lot of your info if you are using some type of contact manager in conjunction with iTunes managing your music/videos. Make sure you also have your images downloaded.

When you have to setup as a new iPhone, you'll lose settings, SMS history, Call Log history (but not voicemail), Safari history/cache, and other little things you take for granted like where you were with using the ipod function, EQ settings, etc. etc.
