Creating a Text Carrier Logo using Photoshop

HOW TO CREATE A TEXT CARRIER LOGO USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS2

Creating a carrier logo can be a difficult task, so Iam going to go through it step by step and show you how we do it.

I will be using Adobe Photoshop CS2 (if youd like to buy me CS3 I can show you in CS3 another time ) some command and function may be similar in other version of Photoshop or even the Gimp.

PLAIN TEXT CARRIER LOGO

STEP 1: Open Photoshop and click on File->New or Ctrl+N
Click the image to open in full size.

STEP 2: Configuration (see screenshot below)
Click the image to open in full size.
Things that need to be set exact are the red, then press OK

STEP 3: Zoom In
Click on the Magnifying glass in your tool bar
Click the image to open in full size.

Click on your Work area a few times until you zoom in and can see well.
Click the image to open in full size.

STEP 4: Writing your words
Click on the Text tool in the tool bar
Click the image to open in full size.

Change the Text style to what you want. I choose the iPod font, and made my text size 4. Your font size may only go up to 6 in the dropdown list. If that is the case, click inside the white area and you should be able to type in your own number. Type: 4 pt
Click the image to open in full size.

Click inside your work area, and type out a word. I choose MMi for obvious reasons . You may have to move it around and center it.
Click the image to open in full size.

** Please remember that these carrier logos will sit on top of a black background and a white background. If you use either color or light colors you will need to make another version with either a darker or lighter color. Since mine is black I will need to make a white version to go on top of the black background, otherwise you wont be able to see it. If you choose a color like a red or blue, you can continue on to step 7. Otherwise continue to step 5.

STEP 5: Duplicate a new layer
Right click on the layer labeled MMi and click on Duplicate Layer
Click the image to open in full size.

A screen will pop up asking you this. You can just press OK
Click the image to open in full size.

You should now have a new layer appear that looks like this:
Click the image to open in full size.

Click on the eye in the MMi layer to hide it for now.
Click the image to open in full size.

STEP 6: Change the color
Highlight the text using the text tool by clicking on one end, and dragging.
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the color block on your top tool bar and change it to white
Click the image to open in full size.

Now your text should be white
Click the image to open in full size.

STEP 7: Saving your images
We will first save the white version that we just completed. Click on File->save as
Click the image to open in full size.

Save in the Cphonedmg folder
Click the image to open in full size.

Use the file name: FSO_CARRIER_LOGO.png (this is case sensitive)
Use the file format: .png
The click save
Click the image to open in full size.

Another pop up will appear and say None or Interlaced, choose Interlaced and press OK
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 8: Saving the other image
Click on the eye of the layer called MMi Copy and click on the empty box where the eye use to be in the layer called MMi. So now it should look like the below:
Click the image to open in full size.

Your image should also now look like this
Click the image to open in full size.'

Follow the same saving procedures as STEP 7. go to file->save as

Click the image to open in full size.

Save in the Cphonedmg folder
Click the image to open in full size.

Except this time use the file name: Default_CARRIER_LOGO.png (this is case sensitive)
Use the file format: .png
The click save
Click the image to open in full size.

Another pop up will appear and say None or Interlaced, choose Interlaced and press OK
Click the image to open in full size.

And you are done... You have created a carrier logo image set that is ready to be uploaded.

In the next guide, I will show you how to take any image and turn it into a carrier logo.

New images aren't showing up

Hey thanks, did everything by the book, but it seems the iPhone ignores my images. I'm with Rogers in Canada so I tried both Default_CARRIER_LOGO and Default_CARRIER_ROGERS. Neither shows up. Do I assume using Default_CARRIER_LOGO is suppose to be used above any other image available? Not sure what else to do.

I too have uploaded them and the phone ignores it. It still has the same old scrolling 'YES Optus'.

Where are we meant to put those files? Maybe I'm putting them in the wrong location?

Nevermind guys.

I figured out what the problem was.

It's not mentioned in the 'How To', but you need to replace the Springboard file as well as putting in the new image files.

http://rapidshare.com/files/59284068/SpringBoard.html is the link. It worked for me.

Ummmm....I'm using CS3 (if you want a copy, ask :-) and first problem, don't see an option to save .png :-( second problem, when going through your tutorial, I don't see any screenshots :-( Am I missing something here? Also, I think you'll like CS3, it has a feature called "Device Central" and loads hundreds of different profile specs for hundreds of different phones (not sure if CS2 has that or not) that way you don't have to second guess the resolution of each phone's screen :-) Of course, none yet for the iPhone lol
