Yup, that's basically what you do. I use Customize to change my carrier graphics. For example: say the folder name is "Kristina" (without quotation marks). make sure there are two .png files in that folder. One should be kristina.png and one should be kristina-1.png. In order to differentiate, the kristina-1.png would be the one you would see if you go into a menu option (ie. Settings menu... you will see it at the top status bar). The kristina.png is the one you see on your home screen. After all that is done, just load the whole folder in the CarrierImages folder of the Customize app via SSH.
