Safari Download Plugin alternative
While we wait for Safari Download Manager to be updated for iOS5, I thought I would try "Safari Download Plugin" 2.0 and its SBSettings toggle "Safari Download Toggle"
After installing both tweaks and using iFile to create the Downloads folder at /var/mobile/Library/ the saving of files failed.
However, instead, create a Downloads folder in the root directory /Downloads then from the root directory click on edit then copy/link your newly created /Downloads folder. Now goto the /var/mobile/Library/ folder and press edit and Create Link, this will create a Symbolic Link pointing to your newly created root /Downloads folder.
This now saves OK on my iOS5.0.1 iPhone 4. BUT do remember that your root folder only has access to 300MB or so of memory, so don't over fill it and copy files to the larger memory area /var/mobile... (folder of your choice) if root memory gets low.
Also enable the SBSettings toggle in its More / Set Windows Toggle menu.
Update
Stopped working after some Cydia tweak updates. Had to go into the Symbolic link properties for /var/mobile/Library/Downloads and click on Owner then mobile to get it working again. After saving, it does revert back to root. Oddly making a new link didn't work.
Ok, important update!!
If you are having problems with email attachments (attaching with AnyAttach or seeing its filename in a received email), make sure that the Safari Download Plugin SBSettings toggle is turned off first and then either respring or close the app you are using with your emails from the app switcher and then relaunch it.Last edited by DC_Dave; 06-09-2012 at 03:56 AM.

Interesting. I really liked SDM, and it saddens me greatly I don't have that functionality any longer (especially since it was expensive).
You kinda lost me atHow do you create a Symbolic Link file? And what is it?However, instead, create a Downloads folder in the root directory /Downloads and create a Symbolic Link file called Downloads at /var/mobile/Library and point it to the root /Downloads folder.

I wouldn't recommend the "Safari DownPlugin" packages available on some non-default repositories - I've seen several reports of these having post-installation package configuration problems - non-obvious to solve, and a sign of poor quality.
Right now I generally recommend trying App Store browser apps with integrated download managers, such as Atomic Web Browser, and then managing the downloaded files using iFile.

Thanks! Actually, I've found that GoodReader is quite the amazing app for downloading and file organization. I'm still learning the other 90% of what it can to - its pretty crazy. I've spoken with the author before, too - great tech support!

Have added instructions on making a Symbolic Link file in the first post above. A Symbolic Link is like a Windows Shortcut, but in this case pointing your save to a folder at a different location. The files I used were from the Cydia BigBoss repo.

I figured out a workaround. You'll need GoodReader and iFile for this:
If you press and hold on the link you'd like to download, choose Copy. Then in the URL bar type "g" without the quotes, then paste the address.
This will launch the Goodreader downloader. From there, once the file is done downloading, press and hold the file and choose "Open In..." and choose iFile.
Easy
Or, just keep the files organized in Goodreader and open them in there. I found it's easy to organize my downloads, and you can even lock folders behind a password

There is now a free tweak available from Cydia called "Safari Download Enabler". It's not as fully-featured as Safari Download Manager, but it should be more reliable than Safari DownPlugin.

I heard the new SDM crashes a lot,, hopefully they'll fix it. I loved SDM when I was on 4.3.3 and I hated to see it go.

I haven't, that's just what I've heard. I think it's either on BigBoss, or MMi.

There's no settings to do. Download it from Cydia and go.

Safari Download Manager now updated for iOS5.
Hmm, do I keep Safari Download Enabler a free regularly updated tweak or go back to paid tweak Safari Download Manager?Last edited by DC_Dave; 06-28-2012 at 07:57 AM.
