Well i have an ipod touch 3g with 3.1.2 firmware. I have both Rock and Cydia. I used to only use cydia until i was recommended to rock, and now i love rock lol.
To give updated information/opinions on the subject.
Rock 2.20.9
Pros:
-Is fast, sleek, colorful, most apps/packages have pictures, easy to use/manage, and has landscape mode.
-Has ability to save all downloaded apps/packages to save to your rock id, so if you restore you can sign in and reinstall everything easily(also transfers anything you downloaded in cydia, though it does not transfer user entered sources)
-Each app/package has user ratings available with user comments.
-essentially more packages/apps because some are only on rock. As far as i have seen, all of cydia's apps are on rock also.
-Has never crashed on me yet.
-After installing apps there is usually only a soft reset instead of a hard one(so you dont have to re run Blackrain). Believe the only hard reset one was like SBsettings or something.
Cons:
-After installing something and you exit rock, it may take a few secs for it to appear on springboard(if applicable), and kind of freeze for a second if you scroll through the pages.
-Rock extensions is something extra installed. doesn't really hinder anything or slow down anything that i have noticed.
Cydia 1.0.30044-65
Pros:
-More widely known, so most tutorial/youtube vids use it
-variety of apps/packages to install
-shows available storage on your device
Cons:
-plain(not very vibrant/colorful)
-Alot of outdated sources/ect
-Very slow(has to load and reload every time you open cydia, or add/delete a source......) or have to install extra things, using extra memory to suppress it...
-Not sure if everyone else gets this, but for me after it loads everything each time i get an error message pop-up saying "Error: Refreshing Data // failed to fetch xxxxxxxxxx" and some of the things it lists i dont even have added/installed O.o <--- this is why i downloaded/installed rock, and cydia still does this every time i use it.
End result, Rock is ALOT better in so many ways. And this is based off of experience of iPod touch 3G 3.1.2 jailbroken with Blackra1n RC3. Results may vary.Last edited by jbone1337; 02-06-2010 at 11:17 PM.

I prefer Rock, but it constantly crashes when I try to do an install or update. So I stay with Cydia.

Rock looks cool and all, but my jailbreak is working great and the last time I installed rock it jacked my phone up. I know there have been updates since then however, I am still gun shy.

Cydia has a brainfart every now and then too. My biggest gripe is that if it asks you to reboot inside of Cydia after an install it will lock up your phone. Exit Cydia and then reboot your phone

Maybe its the OS being used, the device, or maybe non compatible software.
And i got rock app from the blackra1n app, not from cydia. If you got it from cydia, that could be a problem maybe.
But on my ipod touch 3g 3.1.2, it has never crashed once or had any problems of any kind.
And all my apps, JB or app store are paid for. i dont have any cracked versions of anything. dont really trust them...(seems like im in the few % of JB people on that >.>)
And cydia takes like 3mins to load data/reload data when i open. I get error message talking about cannot fetch data or something.(alot of the sources listed i dont even have....).
Well that happens on load up, when i add/delete anything. This gets very time consuming and annoying.
Anyway, ipod touch 3g 3.1.2 with no cracked software, works with Rock and no problems what so ever.OpenFient/Any other gametype: JBone1337

Installing Rock Extentions stop theming of some apps
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there a way to stop the rock extentions from removing the ability to skin/theme some apps?
For instace when i dont have he rock extentions installed i can completly skin cydia and app store etc. But as soon as you throw on the rock extenstions the skinning goes away.
I like elert which i have purchased but cant use it because of this reason.
Anyone have any ideas on a solution?

I am trying Rock again even though I am risking my 3GS jailbreak by doing so and truthfully don't see the hype. Sure it is crayola colorful, but is it so much faster to warrant ditching Cydia? I don't think so. I prefer the clean uncluttered look of Cydia over Rock. The only bonus I see to having Rock is their backup feature.

I prefer rock app merely on its functionality. Cydia seems to offer a lot more.

Rock sucks. End of story. I also have a whole list of facts to support that argument
