Stupid Question About SMS Sounds

Simplest way to put it HOW DO I SILENCE IT!!!??? lol, I have a nice custom sound but its loud sometimes and it doesnt stop when I open the message or by hitting the volume buttons. Is there a way?

sorry let me reinnerate, I want the sound I like it but u know with older phones once u open the message the alert stops. Now mine jus keeps on going until the end even if I have opened responded and put the phone back to sleep. So I was asking is there a way to silence it once u get ur message?

Sorry to drag an old thread up but has anyone found a way for a longer custom SMS tone to be stopped once you hit a button or unlock the phone??

I've been trying to find out how to put a song as an alert for my SMS text messages all over the place and haven't been able to get anyone to give me instructions. Obviously it seems that Leathaface has done this. Can anyone please tell me how to do it.
