Custom Ringtones+FW 1.1.2+iTunes 7.5=SIMPLE, FREE and AWESOME!
Apple is not all bad it seems. Maybe they do listen to us SOMETIMES.

Custom Ringtones with the new iTunes and 1.1.2 Firmware is easy. No software required. No Jailbreak required. No transferring Ringtones to the phone manually.
1. Make your ringtone from any song with Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ OR your favorite audio editing software.
2. Open it in iTunes, right click on it and click "Convert Selection to AAC". Then, right click the new file that appears and Click "Show in Windows Explorer" I am not sure what this is on a Mac.
3. Rename the file from .m4a to .m4r
4. In iTunes, click File/Add File to Library and choose the .m4r file.
5. It will now show up under "Ringtones" in iTunes.
6. Make sure that your phone is set up to sync Ringtones on the Ringtones Tab of the phone settings.
Sync your phone
Now, go look at your ringtones list. Your Custom ringtones will show up in a list called "Custom" above the Standard ringtone list.
For once, Thank you Apple!

Can anybody confirm if you take any itunes file/files from 1.1.2 phone and transfer it over to 1.1.1 phone to get the custom ringtones to work without having to upgrade just for that feature...thanks in advance !

As far as I know, yes, it only works it 1.1.2 and iTunes 7.5
I haven't tested this method personally, but why would you want to do that? It seems like an awful lot of trouble. If you don't want to upgrade, just use the MECCA file patch that I detailed HERE.

my iphone is jailbroken/unlocked, so i can't really upgrade, right? as far as MECCA, i will give that a shot ! but it would simple with 1.1.2 thats why i hopeing maybe somebody who knows what they are doing to try to take newer files from 1.1.2 and replace files in 1.1.1 just for the simple custom ringtone feature...anyways thanks !

My phone was 1.1.1 Jailbroken and I upgraded. I DID have to re-install all of my apps, etc, however, with installer, that is relatively painless. I do use AT&T, but supposedly there is now an anysim that works on 1.1.2. However, if someone else jailbroke your phone for you or you are just not comfortable upgrading and re-jailbreaking, then I suggest the MECCA method.
If you want to upgrade your phone to 1.1.2 and jailbreak it, READ THIS FIRST and FOLLOW THIS METHOD.

In iTunes, click Edit/Preferences, go to the advanced tab. Now go to the importing tab. "Import using" must be set to AAC Encoder. When you right click an MP3 file, it will give you the option to "Convert Selection to AAC." You don't need to do this if it is already a .m4a file. Hint: Convert to AAC just means to convert an .MP3 to an .M4A. Let me know how it goes!

I just upgraded to 1.1.2 and I was able to get my ringtone in the iTunes section, and then sync it with the phone. It shows up under the iPhone drop down menu in iTunes but there is no custom section in my iphones settings and restarting did nothing
