[GIVEAWAY] RAWBKNY Makes Brilliant iPhone Accessories in Brooklyn
This morning we're taking a look at some really cool custom stuff from the guys at RAWBKNY.
RAWBKNY is a new company out of Brooklyn, NY. It's from the same guys behind iFixDirect, with a focus on natural accessories - wood and leather. All their products are hand-made or hand-finished in Brooklyn.
In the Box
RAWBKNY sent us a couple different products to look at; their iPhone 5 skins (leather back pieces which attach via adhesive), and their iPhone 4/4S backs (actual screwed in replacements for the back of your iPhone 4/4S).
The packaging is classy, and matches the raw goods vibe the products are built around. For the skins, a single piece of a dark slate gray heavyweight paper holds the product. The RAW logo is impressed into the top right and the RAWBKNY logo is in the lower center. Two diagonal cuts in the paper allow the skin to slide in and out easily. Watch those shoplifters.
The backs have even better presentation - the same dark heavyweight paper forms a sleeve around a block of wood. The wood has a recessed area for the backplate to fit in, and when removed has a slit where the screwdriver needed to install the piece is inserted. The outside of the "box" has a round hole allowing you to see the material of the back, and the other side simply has an impressed RAWBKNY.COM on the bottom. The packaging gets you excited for the product, actually.
The products don't disappoint from the packaging - they are well made with quality material, and thoughtfully hand-crafted (ours even came with a modmyi.com logo on them - thanks, guys). The skins have 3 strips of adhesive on the back, which have paper on them to protect the adhesive. Remove it, line up the camera and flash opening, and apply the skin - press to make sure it's attached, and you're done. The fit was perfect, and the camera and flash were fully unobstructed by the skin.
RAWBKNY offers a pretty good variety of materials for the skins, which are available for iPhone 4/4S/5. Four types of leather (nappa, lamb - which comes , suede, and patent) as well as four types of wood (bamboo, rose, wenge, and zebra) are available as skins. We tried the patent leather on the back of our iPhone 5.
They're thin enough to not really change the feel of the phone, but thick enough to take away any worries you have about setting your phone on a grainy counter, dirty table, etc. Make no mistake - these aren't full-body protection products, but more for enhancing Apple's design while protecting the phone as it's laid down. You're adding very little bulk to your device.
Backs for the iPhone 4/4S look very similar to the skins, with the main difference being these are actual replacements for the back of your iPhone 4/4S. They come in 4 varieties - leather, bamboo, ebony, and wenge.
The parts are handmade to order, and the fit and finish were spot on. Flush backs, just like your iPhone has now - except you've now got leather instead of glass in your hand.
If you've never swapped out the back on your iPhone 4/4S - it's ridiculously easy. There are two small screws on the bottom of your device, which RAWBKNY provides a screwdriver for. Remove those, and the back simply slides off with slight upward pressure applied. The new back slides into place, pop those two screws back in, and you're custom and done.
Price / Conclusion
You can grab any of RAWBKNY's products directly from their website at rawbkny.com. Prices are actually extremely fair for hand-crafted, quality-material, professionally designed products - the skins range from $15-20 and the backs are $35. Products ship from Brooklyn, NY.
We're giving both the RAWBKNY skins and their backs 4.5 leaves.
As is customary for an MMi review, RAWBKNY is hooking up our readers with free stuff! (Thanks guys!) We've got 3 iPhone 5 skins, and 2 iPhone 4S backs. Make sure to let us know which device you have! Use the widget below to grab entries into the raffle, and we'll pick a winner Saturday morning.

I like the idea of fully replacing the back, especially since mine has a big crack on it.

Super neat item. I think this offers protection in trade with bulkiness.

These look like they'd be great if your iPhone 4/5 is rockin a bumper or if you're going sans case or bumper and want to keep a minimalist look, yet still wanna keep a little protection for the sensitive glass or aluminum back side.
I see a winner here.
