Need help jailbreaking my phone. Appreciate any help assiastance.
I have a (4)
baseband 04.11.08
I'm on 5.0.1 (a failed jailbreak bricked my old phone. this past weekend i got a new phone from the apple store w/ 5.0.1 already on it)
Macbook Pro OSX Lion
My iTunes is on 5.0 Should i update to 5.0.1? Does it matter at this point?
These are the steps i've followed in an attempt to jailbreak my phone the past few days
I'm trying to recall the steps from memory so the names of certain folders and files may be slightly off
Enter DFU Mode
Open RedSn0w 9.9.8b
Select Extras folder
Select firmware/Select Custom firmware (which is 5.0 - also i tried a 5.0 no baseband download i found)
Jailbreak then install Cydia
The screen then says, jailbreaking (or something like that) and there's a progress bar. My screen turns white then it says jailbreaking again. Screen turns black and then reboots. The phone is on and normal. No jailbreak and nothing wrong with the phone. It's just not jailbroken.
While it's doing all that i've gotten different messages from Redsn0w every time i've tried to jailbreak -
1) memory exhausted
2) fingerprint
3) cannot parse ipsw
4) unable to recognize specified ipsw
5) and some others i can't remember right now
Now, if i attempt to jailbreak w/o choosing custom firmware...
Jailbreak then install Cydia
1) fingerprint
2) unrecognized build
3) IPSW is not supported by this version of redsn0w (mostly get this one)
I read somewhere when in iTunes i have to do a Shift+ Restore while in dfu mode. Is this true? I haven't been doing that part.
Any help is appreciated.

Not sure if the current JailBreak applies to 5.0.1
I know it does apply to the 5.0
But since you don't have any SHSH blobs for 5.0 and Apple is only signing 5.0.1 blobs now, than I don't think you can restore to 5.0 firmware, only 5.0.1
I can be totally wrong about the singing of 5.0 right now though

From everything i've read, i was under the impression 5.0.1 can be jailbroken. Check out this link i was reading:

Your iTunes should be version 10.5.1 (latest)
For jailbreaking you would simply open redsnow and click jailbreak then choose to install cydia. No need for clicking extras and choosing custom firmware or any of that.
After the initial jailbreak where you install cydia you run redsnow again, this time choosing extras and "Just boot" since it is a tethered jailbreak.
make sure you have the latest redsnow 0.9.9b8. Do not use the ones in that tutorial, it is old.

Ok, just tried this myself and you do indeed still need to point redsnow to a 5.0 firmware for your device when jailbreaking 5.0.1. I thought MuscleNerd fixed this in the latest version but I guess he didn't. Sorry bout that

Make sure it is a regular stock firmware, never point redsnow to custom firmware.

can you or someone point me to where i can get the regular "stock firmware" please? Because no matter what website i go to and download 5.0, Redsn0w always gives me the message "unrecognized build". This is my dilemna!!! Also, i see some people saying that the're choosing restore + shift in itunes. Do i have to do that? Thanks.

If you're on a Mac: (i don't know what Window's version of Redsn0w's layout looks like)
Open Redsn0w (version 9.9.8b)
Click "Extras" tab
Click "Select IPSW"
A new window will open up. Choose "Desktop" from the sidebar (leftside of the newly opened window)
Look for "iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" then click on it once
Choose "open" at the bottom right hand side of the same window next to cancel
A new window will open - click enter on your keyboard or use your cursor to click "ok"
Click the "back" button at the bottom
Click "Jailbreak" where it says "Jailbreak and install Cydia"
Put phone into DFU mode w/o clicking next (Redsn0w will automatically start jailbreaking)
Or follow the onscreen instructions by clicking "Next" to enter DFU mode (same results as above will take place)
Your phone will be jailbroken
Some people say to click "Extras" again then select "Just Boot" to complete the process
I guess that's up to you
What i found is some of the ipsw's (5.0) weren't properly built therefore Redsn0w won't recognize it. And of course a jailbreak won't happen. I had to download the 5.0 ipsw from different sites, open Redsn0w and attempt to jailbreak until i found one that worked.
The only problem i have, that you may encounter is the "white icon syndrome".
Initially your Cydia icon may be white. Just rejailbreak. The "Just Boot" didn't work for me.
Apps downloaded from cydia will appear as "white icons" on your phone. They will work but will be white (no "picture" to show what the icon is. just a label).
What i have noticed is that after i download apps sometimes and the phone resprings the white icons are replaced by what the icons should show.
A regular respring and fswipecache and iwipecache doesn't work for me.
One more thing, every time you want to boot your phone (just boot) you have to select your ipsw.
When i don't, i get the "unrecognized build" message.
One last thing...
If you go into Cydia and don't see all your Sources and stuff like that, go into the Settings in Cydia and select Developer instead of User. I think you may have to refresh. Not sure. But everything will show up. If you want you can switch back to User after that.
I wrote all this from memory, so if something doesn't work, i may be a little off. Just let me know.Last edited by The 8th Immortal; 11-22-2011 at 07:00 AM.

So why do some ipsw's when saved to my desktop have the little cube thing that shows up in red snow and some don't? What am I doing wrong?

Maybe it's not something you're doing wrong. Maybe it's the ipsw itself.
Like i mentioned earlier, i noticed some ipsw's are faulty. I tried, maybe, 8 before i found one that Redsn0w was able to "recognize".
I downloaded from multiple sorces til i found one that worked.

Thx 8 I'll keep trying. Wish I knew when the untethered jb was gonna be ready. Wouldn't waste my time.

It is better to point it manually as all cases are different, some have 4.3.5, 5.0 or 5.0.1. Just one click Extra > select ipsw > back > Jailbreak.
