Hey, I have a 3GS with an old bootrom, so I'm updating to 5.0.1 and installing Redsn0w 0.9.9b7. This is my first real Jailbreak (I used jailbreakme before).. anyway I'm trying to follow instructions without loosing my music apps contacts etc.. So far I have updated itunes to 10.5, selected "download only" for the 5.0.1 update, have downloaded Redsn0w, and I'm currently backing up my device at firmware 4.3.3. I'm just confused as to the instructions that say to restore to 5.0.1... maybe I'm just over thinking it can someone help me from here? why can't I just update to ios 5.0.1 normally? sorry I'm new at all this. thanks.
Shift + restore will install the 5.0.1 without losing apps, music, and everything already on the phone? (besides cydia and jailbreak stuff obviously) also do i put into DFU mode before shift restore?

Sync your iphone first before you do any restore, you can then sync back after the restore.
You can just restore your iphone from your Home Screen.
After the jailbreak , you have to install your tweaks again. Write them down in case you forget.
Btw, you will be having untethered jailbreak because of old bootrom.
Redsn0w says my ipsw file is unrecognized build, but its 5.0.1, which according to the instructions is what I'm supposed to point it at...nvm i think i fixed... have to download 5.0 ipsw instead (someone who wrote the how to was wrong I think)
