I have a later version iPhone 3GS running 4.1 with iPad bb 06.15.00. Apple has stopped signing 4.1 so now I need to jailbreak with a different method than I was using.
I was using redsnOw 0.9.6rc6 and stock 4.1 firmware, tethered.
I tried to make custom ipsw from Ultrasn0w but foolishly didn't realize I still have 4.1, when it requires OS 4.2. Is there a site out there that will create a custom ipsw for me on 4.1 and Windows?
Right now redsnOw09.6rc6 or 09.6rc8 gets stuck at the pineapple screen when I'm trying to boot tether my phone. Something is different and I don't know what.
I have SHSH blobs for 4.1 saved, both before I tried ultrasn0w and after. I have Windows & and an official SIM for activation. I'm in Taiwan and using an unofficial SIM so I don't pay exorbitant roaming fees

I'm not sure I understand what you did. 4.1 isn't tethered on any device. So you're not experiencing a tethered jb issue.
Custom firmware isn't made by ultrasn0w, that's an unlock in Cydia. What did you use?
You should just restore to a stock 4.1 and jailbreak with greenpois0n. Then use your SIM to activate in iTunes after you jailbreak it.

I've found an answer...just have to read other posts sometimes
It's important to put my phone in "just dfu" mode before using my custom ipsw created by sn0wbreeze.
I have lost all my app data, contacts and photos from the time after I jailbroke my phone in December to now. That's because I've been unable to backup my phone on iTunes. I was using redsn0w to unlock, with an iPad bb of 06.15.00 so iTunes knew something was wrong and didn't talk with my phone anymore. All purchases were made via wifi. Without transferring purchases I couldn't save them.
I think there may be a Cydia app that could save this info for me next time?
Anyway, now I just have to unlock...

Edit: greenpois0n needs to be the one for 4.1 not the one provided on greenpois0n.com currently. Or you can try redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 on it again. Redsn0w is probably the best way to go, but you're not supposed to boot tethered with it. Just select Cydia to jb it.

Hmmm, it's tinyumbrella that's telling me I still have ios 4.1. I misunderstand tinyumbrella. Now that I have unlocked (just like you told me, without forgetting a step I see I have 4.2.1

Ah ok glad you got it fixed.
Did you go to Cydia to install ultrasn0w then to unlock?
03-19-2011, 10:08 PM #7
Cydia on my phone?
03-19-2011, 10:09 PM #8
Yes I thought you said you fixed it? Are you not jailbroken still?
03-19-2011, 10:11 PM #9
Yes I'm jailbroken now. Going to Cydia now. I need to "upgrade some essentials" apparently. then I'll figure out how to look up Ultrasnow
03-19-2011, 10:14 PM #10
Oh ok yes you should upgrade them all and then just search ultrasn0w then install

Maybe you have a minute to give me some pointers for what I may need to do next?
1.Does Cydia have a package to remember my apps and photos when iTunes won't?
2.Is there still a battery drain issue? I couldn't get SAM to work last time, so I just turned off all push notifications. Maybe I need to try SAM again?

If you didn't back your stuff up before you restored, you can't really do anything about it.
You might experience the battery drain issue with that baseband and ultrasn0w. I do believe you should try SAM again. That's the only battery drain fix I know of.

You are fantastic!
Thank you for being so patient, but also not answering questions that I could do myself. I think you have some great time management skills and a feel for when someone can figure it out on their own

I'm perplexed. Maybe I'm just bad at reading everything. Bad habit of mine. I'm sorry if I missed any questions you might have had.

Ok, then it's good you don't read everything. I do feel like I know more, and that you gave me lots of help. I am not being sarcastic at all! I'm an adult and don't need you to repeat things you have outlined nicely. that's good time management in my books!

Ah well thank you then
But certainly if you ever feel unsure about something, don't hesitate to ask or ask twice if I didn't answer anything!
