    Default 3G - 3.1.3 on 6.15.00 HELP! HELP! HELP!
It is currently on 3.1.3 with the 6.15 baseband. Everytime that I try to use redsnow to jailbreak and upgrade to 4.2.1 it doesn't work. During the jailbreak it gets as far as the scrolling text and then that's it. It goes to the apple logo on reboot and keeps rebooting.
    HELP

Is it on 3.1.3 or 4.2.1. You can't upgrade to 4.2.1 with redsn0w, you have to upgrade to 4.2.1 in iTunes. With that 6.15.00 baseband you can only restore to a custom 4.2.1 firmware if you want to go up to 4.2.1.

You don't need to use redsn0w to jb if you go up to 4.2.1 with a custom firmware.

    Ok.

It is currently 3.1.3 with the 6.15.00 baseband. I want to go to 4.2.1. I have tried to do that through itunes and I get an error and it doesn't work. Where can I get the custom FW to do that?

Google the custom fw. Unfortunately we cannot distribute/link to custom firmwares bc of legalities, so you'll have to 1) create one with sn0wbreeze 2.2 (this is a buggy tool, just a warning) 2) find a Mac and create one with PwnageTool or 3) as stated already, find one by search.

Ok, I tried creating one with PwnageTool, chose the 4.2.1 firmware and created a custom fw. when I went to itunes to upgrade to it I got the 1600 error and it wouldn't do it.

Downloaded from a website, supposedly a custom fw 4.2.1 for the 3g and tried that. Same result. error 1600.

I have even tried to upgrade to the original 4.2.1 and it actually goes through the upgrade process and then at the end I get the 1015 error. So then I use TU to exit the recovery...and nothing happens. It keeps booting the apple logo, going black, the booting the apple logo, then back to recovery mode.

FYI - only own macs, don't have immediate access to windows based pc

I also have tried to jailbreak on 3.1.3 on 6.15 with redsnow, but that doesn't even work. (done this before with a different phone)

Currently am reloading 3.1.3 back on the phone after trying multiple ways of upgrading to 4.2.1

Also, haha, I'm not a noob. I've jailbroken 100's of phones with various FW, BB and Tools. Just occasionally run into something a little more complex...this is one of those times.

Bc of the iPad baseband you can't restore to a stock 4.2.1 without resulting in 1015.

You're getting error 1600 bc you didn't put the phone into pwned DFU mode with either redsn0w or PwnageTool first before restoring.

Oddly enough...I HAVE used PwnageTool to put into pwned DFU then restore through itunes...
BUT this time I used redsnow to do it. It worked. No problem. Thank you for your help!

Interesting. How come it makes a difference between pwned DFU and just putting it into DFU?

I used to know the technical answer lol, but I forgot.

Something to do with redsn0w injecting the exploit while setting it into DFU therefore allowing you to bypass iTunes 1600 error. Essentially the pwned DFU mode is doing something to the device that manually putting it to standard DFU isn't.

if you use a custom firmware (4.2.1) it makes the jailbreak tethered so redsn0w doesn't acknowledge custom firmware so how do you do a tethered reboot with custom fireware? (can't get greenposion to work)

The new PwnageTool is untethered so custom firmwares made by it is not tethered.

If you are doing this on an iPhone 3G then it won't be tethered
