Default Cydia will not show packages or sources

Hey I am relatively new to jailbreaking and I am having some trouble with the Cydia app. I can open it and its homescreen works fine, it even says that it is dowloading releases and all that, but as soon as you click on categories or manage or search, there are no packages or sources. I have tried rebooting (use redsn0w 0.9.6b4, as I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.2.1) and I have tried installing Cydia again through redsn0w but I can't get anything to work! I have tried everything I can think of that will work with the programs I have installed (I don't have OpenSSH or any similar program yet). Please help!

I have tried doing changes and clicking refresh also.

    Default Huge Problems

Yeah I decided to try restore my iPhone and that caused me a TON of problems... I have installed iTunes twice now, the first time Apple Mobile Device program would not start so I had to uninstall everything Apple off my computer and redownload it all... Hopefully it will let me restore this time...

If you are having problems with the Apple Mobile Device Service refusing to start and you have Wi-Fi Sync... Make sure you delete it (uninstall it) because it overrides your usb connection...

Figured it out after 6 hours...

I have exactly the same problem. Cydia use to work just fine with me and then it just stopped working after i downloaded biteSMS and then deleted it with cyDelete. I cannot go into: Manage->Packages to uninstall biteSMS or anything for that matter. Nothing ever comes up. I really really need to fix this. Every time someone sends me an sms my Phone reboots! I cant download anything in in Cydia because it keeps on telling me that is cant find anything because it cant find the sources.

So please help me! I have tried everything I can think of and have been at this for hours now.

I cant even restore or reload cydia as the phone just hangs on the apple boot logo and never turns on.

snoobaloo: I spent about 10 hours on this last night and I know exactly how to fix it! First of all biteSMS isn't working with 4.2.1 right now so I recommend QuickReply, it isn't nearly as fancy and it still uses the default Messages.app but it will allow you to reply from any app.

To solve your rebooting problem run redsn0w as you have been but when you get to the screen regarding turning off your iPhone just hold down the lock and home button as if you were restarting the phone. It will turn off after a few seconds, keep holding the lock button and press next in redsn0w, then follow the instructions as normal. Sorry about all the trouble you had... I feel your pain... I was about to swear off apple last night!

Sorry I forgot to mention that if that does not help your Cydia problem then you will need to restore your iPhone through iTunes then rejailbreak. Make sure to sync with iTunes before doing this though so you can keep any purchases! Went through all this last night and I know how frustrating it is!

Thank you for your speedy reply and trying to help me, but sadly it didn't work MadMoody. Cydia is not working. That is the main problem.

    This is what I see..

First off when i boot my iPhone, i click on the cydia icon and go into it. The home screen comes up fine and look as it should.
    /Users/reapersleague/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2011/30 Jan 2011/IMG_0478.PNG

But then when I go into sections, all I see at the top is all Packages which I know is not what I should be seeing. I should be seeing all the other things like 'Themes'.
    /Users/reapersleague/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2011/30 Jan 2011/IMG_0479.PNG
If i go into 'All Packages', Again I get nothing. The whole thing is empty.
    /Users/reapersleague/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2011/30 Jan 2011/IMG_0480.PNG
Same goes for the manage tab at the bottom. It comes up and looks as it should.
    /Users/reapersleague/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2011/30 Jan 2011/IMG_0481.PNG
But when I go into Packages, it shows nothing!

Alright... Hmmm... Have you tried the restore then rejailbreak yet? That's the only thing I can think of... Its the last resort but if you restore the iPhone, make sure to back up first, through iTunes.
Then redownload the ipsw just incase it was somehow corrupted or missing parts, then rejailbreak the device as you did before, making sure that redsn0w is running in Windows XP compatibility mode and being run as an administrator. I had to do that one time and it worked for me.

I know it's a huge pain an massively irritating but I'm pretty sure it'll work for you.

*To enter compatibility mode right-click on redsnow in it's containing folder then select properties, then compatibility, then change the compatibility.

**To run as administrator, right click on redsn0w and select "Run as Administrator"

If you have a hard time finding your ipsw for 4.2.1 I have one uploaded on dropbox and can send you a link if need be!

I have been Jailbreaking the phone in Mac OS x. When ever I reinstall cydia it will finish downloading the JB data and then reboot. but then just hangs on the apple logo forever. the only way i can turn on my phone is with a tethered option. Then cydia does not work and the phone has to run in safe mode all the time. Even if I press the volume button, the phone resprings into safe mode.

No error number. It just says that i am not legible for an restore

How do I find the drop box? I will use your IPSW and try restore it. Do you by any chance have a custom bundle in format of gzip that i could possibly over write cydia? I am not sure if that will work, because I did try it after hours and hours of trying to find that file, which in the end I had to make myself, then then again I get the same error. It hangs on the apple logo and never turns on after its finished Jailbreaking.

A program that could be causing SpringBoard to crash upon pressing the volume button is biteSMS. It is NOT working for 4.2.1 (learned that the hard way). Umm I have a pc so I do not know how to get to the settings to fix that, there is a section in Apple's support center online for the pc and more than likely the Mac that will teach you how to check to make sure that Apple Mobile Device Support is turned on... If it is not your iPhone will not sync no matter what. I am assuming you have iTunes 10.1 and if you have wi-fi sync installed on your computer it will override Apple Mobile Device Support, so if you have that it will need to be uninstalled before you do anything. I'm gonna be out of the loop for a few hours here (going to church) but I will try to respond to your messages as quickly as possible and I'll look into the problem for you as much as I can!

I do not have a custom bundle but let me send you a link, just a sec.

Welcome! As far as the dropbox is concerned, I will need an email to send a link to. Send it in private message though so you aren't posting it where anyone can see it!

Just wanted to see how everything is going. Had a few minutes to check up on stuff about to have to get off though.

Found the website where I got my IPSW from I have attached a link. It will be a ton easier for both of us for you to get it from this hosting site then to go through trying to figure out how to share that file with Dropbox.

Here is the one of the IPSW

    Click

You will want to choose iphone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore

    Hope this helps!

I also found this articlethat sounded similar to the problem that you have been having, maybe it will help out!

Hey MadMoody. I found a post that someone made on how to force a restore. I did it and it worked wonders! Cydia and all JB stuff is gone! YAY

I am not so very interested in Jailbreaking my iPhone again due to all the trouble I had. How ever I am still temped. I think I wait for the unterthered JB option before I Jailbreak it again.

I really thank you ever so much for helping me! Taking all that time off to help me when you could have been doing something else.

    Default Solved

Had the exact same problem (sources and packages did not longer show up in Cydia). I solved it using the following method:

STEP 1 : Download the new package of Cydia here on your iPhone using Safari Download Manager http://jailbreaker.fr/telechargement...honeos-arm.deb (or manually using SSH)
STEP 2 : Once the file is downloaded, go to VAR / mobile / media / Download in iFile
STEP 3 : Click cydia_1.0.3366-... phoneos-arm.deb then "install" (the. deb should be installed soon.)
STEP 4 : Once the installation is complete, close iFile , make a respring and start Cydia.

    Solved everything for me!

    Default another fix

I tried everything I found on the web. reinstall latest cydia, click refresh, etc. untill i found this thread
this didn`t resolve my problem, but led to my solution.
    put this
    dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq hunnypot
in the terminal on your iphone or winscp. then if necessary
    apt-get install cydia
hope it works. If it does, please hit the "thanks" button.
