    Default Volume buttons crash springboard!?

Just finished upgrading to 4.2.1 with redsn0w. Used AptBackup and everything was restored beautifully, settings and all. EXCEPT...using either volume button crashes springboard! I can do a very quick restart in a matter of seconds and everything is fine, but I have no way to use these buttons at all or adjust the volume outside the iPod app. I double checked Activator and there are no assignments to any volume button actions.

    Any ideas?

Also, I noticed that sometimes a banner ad will randomly appear at the top of the springboard. Restart usually kills it and I believe it's coming from "Words with Friends" app somehow, but dunno why or how to stop it.

Using volume control shouldn't affect your springboard. You can try and restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 and see if the same problem still occurs.

After multiple restores and extensive testing I've determined that it is biteSMS that is causing the problem. The volume buttons crash springboard anytime it is installed.

This is a shame considering it's one of my favorite cydia apps but I guess I'll live without it for now. I'm on an older 3GS bootrom so I don't think my current jailbreak with 4.2.1 is tethered, correct? If not, then I don't see any reason to bother trying to downgrade (nor do I think I can at this point anyhow).

Yes, you will get untethered jailbreak at 4.2.1 but don't do it yet. There is no stable jailbreak at the moment. Wait a week or two, if you want a better jailbreak at 4.2.1

I already did do it and everything seems to be ok for now except for not being able to use biteSMS. I can always re-jailbreak with the new fix when it comes out later.

I have also been having this issue on an old bootrom 3G[S], and I also thought initially it may be Activator, but I never tried uninstalling it cuz it would have taken a lot of stuff with it (SBSettings, LockInfo, etc). I had a slight suspicion of BiteSMS' Quick Compose, but I couldn't find any way to disable it in the app's settings. There is no way I am getting rid of BiteSMS though, I'll just use Settings.app to adjust my ringer volume, and avoid the volume buttons. But anywho, thanks for figuring out the problem, and coming back to share your findings.

For anyone else that comes across this thread, it's not just bitesms with volume problems. Snappy or snaptap (I get them confused, one of the two) works properly but prevents the volume buttons from adjusting the volume. The other just didnt work or didnt allow install, if I remember.

As far as the BiteSMS issue, you can upgrade to BiteSMS 5.1.11 beta, which fixes it's volume button issues. The repo to add to find the beta is http://cydia.bitesms.com/cydia/beta5.1/

And here is a list of all the changes in the 5.1.x betas

Thank you for your analysis! I was so bummed after the latest beta of redsn0w was reported to fix all problems. I know it's still beta but was very impressed at how well it works.

Good to see that the BiteSMS upgrade fixes the volume issue.

Also had the same crashing problem on 4.2.1 but in my case the culperate was iRealQuickSMS. Hope this can help someone.
