I'm having the same problem. iPhone 3GS new bootroom 4.2.1 BB 05.13.04
Updated to 421 with PwnageTool and now trying to jailbreak with Redsnow.
It keeps leaving me on the white screen. At first it skipped right past checking for dfu and began jailbreaking.
You only get one chance to try and then you have to restart your computer to get it to do the countdown into DFU - EVERYTIME
My last options are to try using a different cord, try using a window's machine, try using a usb hub as a sort of router. If all that fails I'm going to just go back down to 4.1 and hope everything unlocks and activates and cydia works as normal.
I have tried unplugging it and plugging back in, leaving it unplugged, pointing it at betas and 4.1 and nothing works. Thanks for the help but redsnow is the problem and nothing else.
I am convinced that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on my part that I can do to fix this. I have spend the better part of 12 HOURS trying to get this to work. I have tried COPIOUS amounts of various methods and ALL have FAILED.
Without trying to sound unappreciative; simply put the Dev Team didn't cover all their bases. My only option now is to downgrade back to 4.1 and hope that I didn't lose my unlock and everything works as normal.
I feel that a lot of time has been wasted and I now see the views that my Android associates mean when they say they don't have to jump through hoops to get what they want. As this happens EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE EVER TRIED TO JAILBREAK. I follow all the steps and something ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, goes WRONG.
Please forgive me for my rant, I just needed someplace to vent. Thank you for being that place.
Exact same issue on my early model (2007?) black macbook pro with my 3gs; when the device reboots to apply the second stage of the jailbreak, the computer recognizes a second iPhone rather than seeing that the real one has rebooted.
JBing with a PC did not have this issue, nor did JBing with a newer model unibody MacBook Pro (early 2010 version). I have to assume that it is a hardware issue with this model macbook?
I'm still hunting for a fix, because the black macbook is my primary computer, and I would like to be able to use it for JBing (especially since the JB is still tethered, I would like to be able to reboot it with the laptop that I carry around with me.)
If anyone makes any stunning discoveries, please do report back!
I used onyx to clean my MacBook then restart the laptop then the error goes.everytime I got the error I had to onyx n restart I think it's abt temp files or settings.
Try using the latest redsn0w 0.9.6rc8. If the error continues open up itunes and see if it shows two of the same devices are connected it happened to me a quick reboot solved this issue.
Hey guys I think someone already mentioned here, but I was having the same issue as everyone else. I'm using an old black macbook on snow leopard 10.6.5.
Every time I ran redsnow 0.9.6b6 to jailbreak my iphone 3gs (newer version), it would skip DFU steps and go straight into the jailbreak. It would then stop on the iPhone's reboot and reach an "unexpected error" and fail to jailbreak.
I also noticed that on itunes there were two connections showing up for my one iphone: my regular unlocked iphone and one that is supposedly in recovery mode.
Since i just restored my iphone to a customized 4.2.1 firmware, i guess itunes was still reading how my iphone was in recovery mode.
SOLUTION: I just restarted my macbook, noticed only one iphone connection showing up on itunes, ran redsnow 0.9.6b6, and everything worked perfectly!
my turn lol, i am running leopard 10.5.8 on a year and a half old macbook and every time i JB my 3gs new BR and boot tethered my iphones screen becomes much darker and has a slight purplish/blueish hue to it. In other words redsn0w is causing problems with my iphones screen. if i restore my phone to 4.2.1 firmware or just reboot untethered the problem goes away, the only time the problem occurs is if i boot tethered with redsn0w. i also had problems with different versions of redsn0w crashing during the JB too, in fact the only one that works for me is version 0.9.6b5 on my Mac. I am not new to JB'ing, I have JB'n dozens of phones and never had a problem. U guy got me thinking it may be an issue with the computer I am using, maybe I will restore to 4.2.1 and try using a Windows XP machine.
I HAD the issue with it going right into jailbreaking before I could even start to go into DFU mode and then would give me the "unexpected error", white screen, etc...I wasn't completing the restore process when iTunes would ask to restore as a new iPad or from backup. I would quit iTunes and then run Redsn0w. all I did was restore once more and then set it up as a new iPad.. then ran Redsn0w. went through no problem. hope this helps someone.
ok i had this problem too.
the problem with redsnow is that after it runs once, it will stop working. the easiest fix for this is just every time you run redsnow, reboot your computer. then you won't get an unexpected error. just remember to reboot before launching redsnow and everything should be fine. good luck!
