This happened on my wife's phone. I did a re-jailbreak with the first Redsn0w and it's fine. Guess you can't use iBooks though.

Same problem here AT&T iPhone 3G 4.0 jailbreak and unlock. Everything works but MMS. I really don't want to re-jailbreak. If possible I'd like some sort of solution similar to what happened when the carrier update work around that was available to get MMS working on 3.0.

Hello. This assumes you have a iPhone 3G. (And probably by now your tethering is not working as well, which was working on stock 4.0)

    1. Restore on iTunes with 4.0, setup as a "new phone", ie: no restore of a backup.
    2. JB using 0.9.5b5-3, check to see your MMS, tethering working.
    3. Run 0.9.5b5-4, this time unchecking Cydia (leave others as is)

Your MMS, tethering and iBooks should all be working now.
    Please report back.

I'm in the same boat. Not only do I not have MMS, I have no data as well.

    Questions:

Do I use the same IPSW file for both JB's?

Does restoring as a new phone lose pics, texts, contacts etc.?

Does unchecking Cydia mean I cannot have Cydia at all? or at least not as part of this version?

Do I use the same IPSW file for both JB's?
Yes, the final from Apple. For 3G, it is iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw. Be careful though, the GM released at WWDC has the exact same name, but it was a different .ipsw. Best thing is let to let iTunes just download it for you (not download and restore first) and save it. Then do a search for .ipsw you will find it buried deep within folders in your home folder.

Does restoring as a new phone lose pics, texts, contacts etc.?
Yes and No. Backup your photos manually when your iPhone is connected via USB, so you can sync them later with iTunes when all JB is done. Your contacts should be sync'ed with something, I use Windows Contacts, so you can restore them easily. Your texts, well yeah, they get deleted. There are a couple of ways of backing them up though, please investigate. The problem with Apple's unselective backup and restore thing is, all your preferences, carrier settings, etc get backed up as well and restoring them more often than not screws things up in JB.

Does unchecking Cydia mean I cannot have Cydia at all? or at least not as part of this version?
Strangely, No. Unchecking means "do nothing Cydia related: if it was installed, fine, leave it." I agree with you, it is confusing. In other words, it does not act like a toggle the way, say, "Verbose Boot" option acts.

Just like the rest of us, I am thankful to the dev-team and I use whatever they produce fully knowing I might screw things up. But (and there's always a but), redsn0w 0.9.5b5-4 on a fresh iOS4 installation screwed a lot of guys here, including me. Anyways, happy jailbreaking :-)

    Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 should fix it.
